Hi, I'm getting a niggling pain in my right hip joint, it's worse when cycling or when sat down for prolonged periods.
Presuming it's related to the hip joint and there is some wear going on - what is the latest advice/ opinion on the use of glucosamine/ fish oil supplements to lubricate the joint? Is there any alternative?
I plan to get it checked out, but at the moment it's a niggle rather than pain.
Ta.
Well, I doubt it will make it worse. So why not?
any of the joint lubricant type treatments are worth a try - cod liver oil gives good results in some people.
As you say - worth getting it looked at too, though.
So why not?
I would be wasting my money...
The pain could be down to a lot of reasons one of which could be the onset of arthritis. Best to get it checked out by a doctor first to see if it really is arthritis because by taking any sort of supplement you could be treating for the wrong condition.
I had a motorcycle accident twenty or so years ago which smashed my left ankle. The medical advice then was that arthritis could start to set in rather earlier because of the damage I had sustained. On and off I started to occasionally suffer aches and then my daughter who is a physiotherapist suggested using Glucosamine and Chondroitin which is supposed to be able to reverse the problems associated with arthritis.
I did some research on the internet and decided that a dosage of 500mg/400mg would be a good starting point and not too expensive. I have been taking one of these tablets every day for the past several years and can honestly say I haven't had a single ache in my ankle since. Glucosamine and Chondroitin should be taken together because they complement each other for some reason. You will also find all sorts of different dosage sizes and recommendations about what daily dosage to take but I found the 500mg/400mg tablets to be sufficient for my condition.
Hope that helps.

Yup. Efficacy of glucosamine in joint health has now largely been disproved. Diagnosis would be much better.
Most reviews seem to say the glucosamine and chondritin supplements dont give any benefit.
i think 3 tablets a day are the initial recommendation (3xabove dose) and also to get good quality tablets as some are poor quality.
Also try 1000mg of omega 3 fish oil.
Neither sorted me out but wont do any harm.
Get to the gp and push hard for atleast an xray, i had one today and only had to wait a week for the appointment.
Get yourself to physio and ask for some accessory movements.
Quackwatch say "Chondroitin appears to be useless. Whether glucosamine is useful is conflicting, but the best-designed studies are negative."

A review of many trials quotes in the NHS Direct says neither have a real benefit:

But +1 for visiting the physio. 20 years ago I had worsening knee pain which the doctor put down to "knees starting to wear out". I went to the physio who diagnosed the knee cap wasn't follwoing the proper track and gave me some exercises. 3 months later the pain was gone and it hasn't been a problem despite thousands of miles on the bike since. I have a friend with the same sort of story for his hips.
some interesting comments, thanks guys
I also asked my Mum who stopped taking glucosamine and chondroitin as it made no difference to her condition
sounds like doctors appointment, xray and physio could be in order
maybe time to cash in my PMI
Not sure if this helps, but my dog was suffering stiff joints, and 2 glucosamine tablets a day have made him much more sprightly, and no signs of stiffness in his joints. This is despite there being no evidence to say it works. Try it for a month, see what happens - after you get a proper diagnosis.
I've taken Glucosamine/MSM/Chondroitin supplement for 2 months now and have definately noticed an improvement. My knees audibly cracked loudly since my teens and hardly do at all now and the pain has gone from my elbows which started in the past 12 months. My father in law has had 2x ACL ops and has noticed similar results after only 3 weeks on it.
I'm pretty cynical about these things so I wouldn't be taken in by a placebo I don't think.
I'd say give it a go. Try this place
