Familiar with the area and the trails but the spends are low.

Fitness high, excitability super.

Hike-a-bikey easy peasy?

Edit: Disclaimer- Money contributed at other times for upkeep of trails/FC/FirstAid/blah.

You can only get so far up the world cup track by proper fire road or path. Would be a hellish hike to the top of the gondola. Not nice terrain at all

That's it BoardinBob, if it's full on'gloamin lumpy-hillside i'll Mastercard it for the weekend.

Thing is, it's my first time on the red & being wholly ignorant of etiquette would rather not be the solo arsehole grunting up the hill.

You can easily get up to the wallride on the world cup trail which also connects onto the worst bit of the red- fire road up to there. But it's a bit pointless tbh. I don't know walkers paths, you see bits and pieces under the gondola but I don't think there's much, pretty much everything was helicoptered in for the cafe and trails.

If I was at nevis range and not using the gondola I'd probably do the bottom of the worldcup a couple of times (it's pretty xc-bike-able, I bounced a borrowed Orange Gyro down it) but I wouldn't bother with the fag-end of the red. Better just to go and do the witches trails, which are pretty nice. You couldn't get me to hike-a-bike up to the top at gunpoint.

Glad your up Northy. Being that i've been riding around The Range for years, but never "done a trail" I feel I may be getting myself in a tizz.

Witches XC i've done to death you see, I love it.

I'm on a week today, can I just enter the Red wherever I want and ride from there? I can see in my head where I want to be just, y'know, it'll be busy a week after the BDS with peeps paying full whack for access.

But then the other half of me thinks fk it, I grew up here, my hill :-)!

Edit: My soul needs the motorway section too.

Sorry language is a bit too codified for me but dragging your bike up the hill to get free access to the Red / DH? Sounds like a complete ballache to me...

If you are fit then what's the issue? Go natural / Kinlochleven et al 😉

Like a bit of ballache.

Let's see what happens, i'll do the witches xc & get a buzz that will promptly lead to a 5 day pass.

*please, sun, please, sun.*

Edit: Kinloch's for another week.

I think in theory, you're only supposed to ride the dh and red if you've paid for the lift. In practice there's often people sessioning the bottom of the dh. But the bottom of the red just isn't that good tbh, the bit that's easy to access unlifted is the bit you'd not bother to ride if there wasn't a lift.

Probably the easiest way to the top is to fireroad it up to the wallride, cut through to the red, then push/carry up the red from there. Bit antisocial maybe but then nobody'll know you're pushing the whole thing, you might be just sessioning...

Still wouldn;t. I love the red for repeating and for careless throwing away of gravity credits. Another way to look at it, I wouldn't carry a bike up aonach mor for a tenner so I wouldn't do it to save a tenner 😉

Ooh plan c? Marshall a day of the BDS, watch racing, spend marshalling money on an uplift (they might cut you a deal, mate of mine got a free day for marshalling hte worldcup), get more riding done in a day with the lift than you could with 2 days and no lift. Multiple wins. Unless you end up marshalling in the forest and hte midges leave only bones.

I wouldn't do it for fifty quid!, its bad enough walking down on World Cup day.

Trying to walk up would turn a fun day into a total pain in the arse

At the first SDA race using the new track accessed by the gondola, we walked up the track before the lifts opened for practise then got the lift down , was hard going and that was without lugging a bike up too.
