I've got a Crank brothers highline dropper post on my bike and it has an issue.

Everytime I press the lever to lower it slightly it carries on dropping even after I've stopped pressing the lever ?

The cable seems free enough at the lever end ?

Any ideas ?

Clue is in the name - dropper 😉

Seriously tho - is there a barrel adjuster on it?

Hi Molgrips.... I've tried adjusting the barrel adjuster but it doesn't make a difference.

Does sound like a cable issue.

Is it easy to check the cable where it fits to the dropper.

I've never had a cb dropper before.

I had one for a while and it was very well built but needed to be set up correctly, I remember there was a good FAQ with the instructions or on their website and the support for this was very good, I'd contact Crank Brothers if you can't sort it.

As above, definitely sounds like a cable tension issue. I have two these posts and they are the best I’ve used but are sensitive to having the outer cut too long or the inner binding.

Have you checked the collar on the post?  They can come loose

I've fitted one just recently and am well happy with its performance. If I remember correctly though, their functioning correctly is very dependant on everything being setup correctly at the business end of the seatpost (this bit)

Thanks for all the replies.

To be honest it was working perfectly until the other day when I dropped the fixed part of the post into the frame more so I'm wondering if the cable may have kinked slightly.

That sounds highly plausble. Pull some more cable through the frame.

First thing to try is to undo take the tension out of the cable, just remove the lever from the bars and see if the problem still persists, if it does then remove the post from the bike and see if the cable is kinked or tight anywhere.

Should be an easy fix, potentially replace the cable. I know when my dropper had issues it was when i slammed it into the frame and kinked the cable as it was lower than the exit hole.

Holy coincidence, Batman, I had the same issue last night. Fixed it.

In the image rockandrollmark posted, see that arrow pointing down to the rhs of the "closed" arrow? That needs to be lined up with the vertical spline on the outside of the grey cable connector. You can just make it out in the image under the black thumb screw collar.

Doing that means the rotating blue part turns the internal keyed rod (again that you can see poking out from the post internals) fully anti-clockwise to it's hard stop. That's what locks the post in position when you release the lever. If it's anything other than that the blue part doesn't turn the internals far enough anti-clockwise and holds the post mechanism open.

Really hope that mkes sense and you can follow it. I'll try and post an image if not.

Just to update this thread...

I'm still having issues with getting the post to stop sagging after releasing the lever when weighted.

I've checked cable routing to ensure no kinks
I've replaced the inner cable twice
I've checked the inner cable isn't under loads of tension.
I've aligned the marks as mentioned above.

Its still creeping down after I've released the lever but only when its weighted, if I lift off the seat and then sit back down it stops.

Emailed Crank Brothers but no reply.

Emailed Extra this morning to see if they can help.

Blooming frustrating as its great when it works.

Did you pull more of the cable through when you did that to make sure it's stayed straight? It does sound like a kinked cable tbh. However, could be coincidence and might be a warranty job. Two year warranty.

Check the angle the outer cable leaves the lever and enters the frame, I had an issue with not staying dropped and amending the lever angle so the cable was nice and straight with a nice bend to enter the frame fixed it.

I pulled both ends of the outer cable when the post was out of the frame to make sure there were no kinks.

Outer cable leave the lever in a nice radius and not tight.

My text above doesn't make sense as I edited it badly, but I think you understand what I was getting at - when you put the post in the frame and insert down to the height you need, at the same time you need to pull the outer gently so it down't stick in the seat tube and get kinked as the seat post is inserted - but carefully so it also doesn't pull the outer free from the bottom the post.

I really like these posts but they are sensitive to cable routeing. I've just put one in a new Scandal frame and the route around the bottom bracket is quite tight. At the moment the post is creeping up veeeery slowly and I think it maybe because the remote cable return spring tension is struggling to overcome the cable friction.

How old is it? The original ones had a spring that compressed over time & doesn't return properly causing issues. I had my spring replaced with an uprated one via Extra & it's been fine since. That was over two years ago. Recent ones should have the uprated spring as standard

Hmmm it's about 2.5 years old at a guess.
