Hi,
With me ditching my trail bike for a 160/160, I'm looking at beefing up my 'cross bike for more general trail riding.
I'm currently running Sammy Slicks which I love, for 80/20 road/off work and was planning to tubeless them (on mavic tn719 rims) next time I replaced them, which isn't far away, with the rear having done 1500km+ and turbo duties! However I fancy trying something that will hold its line a bit better on rocks and offer a bit more cushioning. I don't race, so weight and UCI compliance aren't really an issue here.
I saw the new Maxxis Mud Wrestler TR in 18bikes today and would have bought them if they had any more in stock. However having pondered it for the last couple of hours, I'm not sure I fancy dropping from 35c to 32c.
A quick bit of googling throws up the new WTB Cross Boss, which looks right up my street - but with them being new a) they are relatively scarce and there are not many real world reviews out there. I've never run WTB tyres.
Has anyone else had any luck with anything similar? How about Schwalbe Smart Sams? Tubeless? Or ever persuade me that actually the mud wrestlers are what I need?
Cheers
Clement Xplor MSO...they do a 40c if you've got the clearance.
I ran wire bead Smart Sams tubeless with no issues. Currently running Specialized triggers 2 bliss.
What is the traction like, they look pretty low profile? Any experience of tubeless? Thanks.
Thanks kiwijohn. They are definitely an option.
Better than Sammy Slicks! The 40's are chunkier than they look. The bead is quite loose, so can be an issue on some rims (stock cannondale disc esp) but hold air well (and not soopa thin sidewalls).
Ok cheers - I need to check clearance tomorrow for 40c when I put the wheels back in...
I had the Smart Sams in a 35. Great traction. The Triggers are only 33, but a lot quicker on the road.
At the risk of repeating myself as per the other cross tyre thread.... OnOne Gravel Road are ace and available in a 40.
Was just looking at them on the planet x site. Thanks.
