Looking for a route that gets the most bang for buck with High Street. Staying near Howtown at the back end of this week. I was looking at Ullswater singletrack to near Sandwick then up Boredale and drop down to Bridgend from the Hause, then BW to Hartsop and slog up past Hayeswater to the Knott to High Street and then onto Thornthwaite Crag. Revisit HS, then follow the old roman road via Wether Hill and Loadpot Hill to The Cockpit near Pooley Bridge, for a final descent back to Howtown. Option could be that I stay up when I get to Boredale Hause and traverse across past Angletarn Pikes to HS. Any thoughts or alternatives that take in that general area? TIA
Only done this a couple of times. The single track heading south from Pooley Bridge to Howtown is great. And the ride up Boredale is lovely too, really scenic and just a bit of a push at the end (for me at least).
But the schlep up from Hartsop past Hayeswater is a steep pull and then a hike a bike up to The Knott. I had also promised my riding companion a near endless downhill back north past Loadpot Hill. The reality is that it’s undulating at best, boggy at worst and requires much more pedalling than I’d really want. I’d personally not bother with it but each to their own and some may quite like it for the views alone.
That’s disappointing...it generally points down so had high hopes. The other option is Helvellyn via Keppel Cove to the top, then descend to Seldom Seen via Sticks, then back via UST. Was saving that for a few weeks time with some mates though...
I thought the same, looking at the map you’d think it would be a great route. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a great position but don’t expect an endless 10km downhill.
The lakeside singletrack is also good from memory but even longer since I’ve done that so may have changed since. Suspect it’ll get lots of walkers too.
Howtown - ullswater bridleway - glenridding - hartsop - knott - angle tarn - satura crags - boredale - glenridding - UBW - Howtown - pooley bridge - askham moor - descend to howtown.
Stays lower, but I've always thought high street is a tad dung.
I've done as you've suggested a few times but starting at Hartsop. It's fine when it's been dry for a while and but can get pretty boggy along the top. But after Loadpot Hill it's usually OK and you do get about 6 miles of downhill which is pretty good. If you've never done it I'd give it a go.
It's great when its dry, but there has been a lot of rain in the Lakes recently. As mentioned above, save yourself a bog fest and ride something rocky!
The The Angle tarn - Boredale hause loop from Glenridding is good, and can be extended into a nice rocky figure of 8 with the Ullswater lakeshore - Boredale Hause tagged on the end.
