Following on from a couple of other threads, could i pester you guys for some route info for riding Helvellyn.

Myself and 3 mates are planning it for start of May, we've been wanting to do for a while. we're a mixture of abilities ranging from near pro DH'er to me whos has been riding for years but is not as fit as I used to be as i don't get out much these days since the kids arrived!! I've ridden in the peaks a bit and the shore track from Pooley Bridge to Patterdale a few times. Don't think i fancy going down dollywagon though!

I'm thinking of riding from Patterdale up grisdale valley to the tarn, then shouldering the bike up dollywagon, riding over the peaks and coming down either keppel or sticks and back to Glenriding. Is this route feasible and will it be fun? Maximum fun is required

Oh and can you tell me how long that route is as well?

Cheers for any info and feel free to suggest any other routes.

Thats the way I have always done it (ok twice) Gong the way you suggest the downhill is quite smooth and fast ish. Doing it in reverse would mean a slightly more technical decent.

Go down Sticks pass. It is approx. 10 times better than Keppel Coce

Ditto above. On the way up Grisedale there are some shorter push/carry sections and then the big one up Dollywagon, which is at least easier than it used to be due to the stone staircase...

The Keppel Cove descent is a hoot but over with rather quickly and not technical at all since they rebuilt the path. Sticks is definitely better value plus you get to ride over an extra summit on the way there 🙂

Keppel Cove descent is over way too quickly. Handy bail-out option, though if you need to get off the mountain in a hurry.
I'd try Sticks Pass and the mines descent next time, after making the mistake of an ascent that way last time.

I'd go up Keppel Cove, then detour up to the summit of Helvellyn itself, then back down to Sticks Pass.

Going up Dollywagon would be a horrible carry imo, whereas Keppel Cove isn't too bad at all as a climb.
