Hi - i'm not very technically minded although i am learning!
I am building myself up a light 5-Spot from second hand parts and was going to get some XTR 9sp M970 shifters but i read that these are not compatible with 'rapid rise' / 'shadow' rear derailleurs?
But then i also don't understand why all the different lengths of cages ( i thought shorter was better)- i have an 11-32 cassette and want to run a middle & small ring set-up with a bash guard replacing the outer ring.

Rapid rise mechs are just sprung the opposite way so that the mech returns to first gear and not the high gear
Or if you prefer they reverse what the two shift levers do.
Not te best description sorry , rapid rise mechs will work fine with 970 shifter
Normal shadow ones should work just not the new shadow plus as they are 10 speed
