Recently bought an iGot-U GPS logger after reading an ST review in one of the mags from a while ago. It works very well and I'm really liking it.

Now I've built up a bit of a library of routes I've completed around the same area (Surrey Hills), I wanted to see if I could take bits of some routes and splice them with bits from other routes. This would allow me to create new routes where I would know the distance/ascent/descent/etc prior to actually completing the route. Any idea what software would allow me to do this? I tried SportTracks but couldn't see how it could be done.

Hope thats clear 😕 Thanks

You can do it manually with trial and error and a bit of a following wind and some time on your hands.

Just open the .GPX file in Notepad or other editor and you'll see gazillions of timestamps / lat / long entries.

Cut and paste to your hearts content.

Then upload them to e.g. MapMyRide for them to be rendered appropriately.

Once in MapMyRide you can drag and drop to fine tune the route.

I use http://bikeroutetoaster.com/ you can upload your GPX files, see them on maps and edit / create new routes to dowload on to your GPS for navigating.

Not sure if your unit can be used for navigaiton or is just a log but wither way you will get distance, height and profile info on the website (on summary tab) to inform your ride. Sign up (free) and you can save your routes on line too.

Cheers Andrew. Would the time/date stamps not being in the right sequence be a problem when its loaded into the mapping software? Could the time/date stamps be deleted?

TBH I was hoping for something a little more drag and drop...bit like when you take a sound recording, highlight a section of track and then cut that into a new track. Just wondered if the SW exists for GPX files.

I have looked around for something similar but not seen it yet.

I bought Anquet for its organisational capabilities but it is so slow on my dell precision laptop it is ridiculously unusable.

I might end up trying to write something suitable...

not sure about a free solution, but Tracklogs will let you copy & paste parts of a route into another route.

RK...Cheers, I'll have a play on that website and see what can be done.

Yep my device is literally a logger. Not bothered about having the navigation info whilst riding but nice to download at the end of a ride and see how I've done.

TG...if you do find something suitable, please let me know.

PH...Cheers, I'll take a look. Don't mind paying if it does the job.

You could try Garmin Mapsource. I find its very useful for joining / splitting / editing GPX tracks etc.
There are ways of downloading and installing it without a CD. Plus you can download free Openstreetmap based maps to use with it.

Also, if you've recorded lots of GPS tracks, you could consider contributing to Openstreetmap, by mapping your trails. It will mean they will appear on the maps on Bikeroutetoaster (and other websites/software), so you could then use the autorouting option to easily plot routes along them.
