I've got a set of Gloworm lights that are sadly now out of warranty as the cable outer at a couple of places has come away (I guess by fatigue with turning my bars?!) I'm electrically incompetent and wondering if anyone has any advice on who might be able to repair for me. I'm sure it's probably quite simple if you know what you're doing but sadly I don't. Any sparkies on here who want a few quid to fix them? I'll try and post pics below but I always have bad luck with them too!

I can send back to the distributor, who can then send around the world to Gloworm but that'll no doubt take an age so if I can get back out after dark ASAP then suggestions welcome

If the insulation of the inner cables is undamaged, I'd probably just wrap it in electrical tape, and at the battery end, tape the cable to the top of the battery to prevent any further flexing.

Heat shrink wrap it if it's still working.

Take it to eg Maplins to source a similar fitting.
Cut old fitting off.
Solder new fitting in its place.
Heatshrink.
Go ride.

Yeah it is still working at the moment but the inner insulation has been breached so not keen on risking getting any moisture on it. Bought them as supposed to be submersible and not going to let me down in the middle of a multi day epic somewhere. Leccy tape has done the job so far but not reliable enough so need a proper solution.

Ambrose - sounds easy when you write it like that. I'm sure it is if you're not an electrical luddite like me!

Ive used this to sucessfully seal some chinese batteries against the elements.

You can build up a good layer over time and it rubberises quite nicely.

If they were mine I'd put a little dab of hot melt glue on the bare wire for water proofing then wrap the whole lot in sugru for strain relief and extra proofing (you could use hot melt for this too but sugru is better). You could solder on a new connection but it won't be watertight

Send Smudge an e-mail via mtbbatteries,co.uk.

He'll probably sort you out a quote for repairing the battery.

I'd normally reinforce it will a tapered cone of black epoxy, that's what i use on fragged Di2 cables, Sugru will do just as well though.

Problem with heatshrink is that unless you're replacing the plug, you won't get stuff that's small enough over the plug. If you're thinking of replacing the plug, don't forget that the battery is still "live" and you'll need to avoid shorting it when cutting and soldering (easier said than done). Sugru is a good suggestion, better than electrical tape 🙂

Mtbbatteries.co.uk are set up as the UK service centre for Gloworm lights via Ison Distribution. If anyone has an issue with their Gloworm light in or out of the warranty contact www.IsonDistribution.com and it can be advised from there.
