Ok need some advice/ opinion. Just got some new shifters to replace the 10 year old seen better day ones.

Got some Shimano Deore M590 Rapidfire Pods 9 speed but had some issues in setting up the gears to the point of giving up and taking it to the local bike shop only for the mechanic to tell me I have a 7 speed shifter with a 9speed cassette

So at this stage I feel like an idiot making such a mistake. But on inspection I ordered a 9speed shifter on the box it says 9speed but the shifter only shifts 7times

Ps I've fitted and been riding with them

So where do I go from here?

They must be faulty then. Do the shifters say 'M590' on any part of them? If they do, then they're definitely faulty if they only do 7 shifts (should be 8 'clicks' if 9-speed).

Do they shift the 7 cogs ok? If so, you may have your rear derailleur limit screws set too far in, thus preventing the shifters from shifting to the extreme cog(s).

A true 7-speed shifter would have too much throw on each shift, as a 7-speed block is spaced wider than 9-speed, meaning you'd only have 2 or 3 cogs max shifting ok.

Sounds weird.

Hi it only says shimano on it and I can not get it to shift into the lowest ring.
But defo only shifts 7 times

Just to clear thing up if you was to buy a new shifter you get a 9 speed shifter to go with a 9speed cassette?

Thanks
