You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
A while ago one of the rear rack mounting points on my London Road broke off when doing up the bolts. I managed to clean it up and the LBS put a new rivnut in and all is fine and dandy. Or so I thought...
Recently I've had a really annoying rattle i can't get to the bottom of, thightened everything up, still there, could not figure it out.
Today I found the culprit, part of the old broken rivnut is still inside the frame, the right hand seat stay to be exact.
How on earth do I get this out or as a minimum stop it rattling? With the new rivnut in the hole is too small to even see it let alone get it out.
I'm pretty stumped, my only idea so far is squirt some grease in and hope it catches it and makes it less rattly.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm really struggling
If you can’t get the old rivnut out then plan B is an equally valid option, if you can rotate the frame so that it’s upside down and the loose rivnut can be settled at the top of (presumably) the seatstay, then a gob of epoxy or thick grease should hold it. You don’t want to block any drainage holes.
Alternatively, if your frame is alloy then you could try and drag the rivnut with a magnet and epoxy it in place?
3m Spray mount
Even if the frame is steel, you can still drag the rivnut with a magnet...
A blast of Waxoyl?
Sounds like squirting something in isn't such a bad idea then, I'll see what I have in the shed
squirt in expanding foam, will trap the nut and not add any weight.
Was going to say a bit of gorilla glue but the expanding foam solution posted above is a great idea.
take the seatpost out and see if there's a hole from the seat-stay into the seat-tube, if there is it's probably bit enough to fall through
or do as the others have said, i had a similar problem and splodged some contact adhesive through a hole and shook the frame about until the rattly offender caught the glue and stuck
Cheers, had the seat post out yesterday buts there no hole unfortunately (was my first thought too). Will put some glue in I reckon
UPDATE
Ended up squirting a bit of super glue in via the rack mount hole, turned the bike upside down a couple of times and think I managed to catch the nut. I now have one less rattle on the bike.
No idea how long it'll last bit super glue looked the best of what I had and the nozzle meant I could get it inside the frame without spoiling the threads on the hole.
Cheers
Chalk this one down as another STW success story!
