Hey guys! So, unfortunately, I recently had my bike stolen and I have to say, it was a rather dreadful experience. I was using a Master Lock U-Lock to secure my bike, but I learned the hard way that those locks are essentially useless and can be bypassed with something as easily accessible as a pen. 🙁
So before I buy my new bike (since it's how I get around all the time) I want to make sure that I have a wealth of information at my fingertips regarding bike locks and how to keep my bike secure and safe. I know there are some basics that everyone who has a bike must know and this article I discovered in my search filled in some blanks for me.
However, I just want to make sure that there isn't anything they have left out, or if there are any other resources that I need to check out? Please let me know and thanks in advance for any advice offered on this topic! I appreciate it guys! 🙂
Abus Granite X-Plus or Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit D-Lock through the back wheel and rear of frame and a second decent cable lock for the front wheel, also passing through the frame.
There's some good videos on Youtube about how to lock your bike in this way.
Problem is though, if its a decent bike and the thief wants it, they will have it either way.
When I used to commute by bike I locked my bike in the above way but also inside a locked bike shed which was covered by CCTV and never had a problem in three years. Make it as hard as possible for the thief with the hope that they will move on to easier pickings.
I use a kryptonite new York forget about it for the frame and I loop a cable lock through the front and rear wheels.
Much appreciated guys! The Kryptonite New York Lock seems to be rather popular among fellow cyclists so I will definitely check that one out. I'm also going to take your advice devash, because you're absolutely right. If a thief wants something bad enough they will find a way to get it. I guess I was just unlucky with having the Master Lock. Leaving my bike somewhere with CCTV cameras will no doubt serve as a boost in the overall security of my new bike.
I have heard that some bike thieves are not really deterred by CCTV cameras at all, I guess this could be attributed to social conditioning. If someone looks like they are in the right place and there is really nothing suspicious about them, it rarely raises any red flags.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'm going to invest in the kryptonite lock and some cables as well.
Locks that are approved by your insurer.
Leaving bikes outside is a gamble, if I'm using a bike in the city then making it less appealing to thieves is the first step.
