I'm converting back to a 3x9 from a 1x9 because I'm a big jessie and it's all I have to spare,

I'm using an XT M770 front mech- Dual Pull,

I'll not be cabling it up until the morning but looking at it I can't help but think it looks wrong,
Is it a case that I'm just not used to a front mech or is there something I'm missing?!

Looks a good effort, might be a smudge high. 2-3 mm gap between the out shift cage and the outer ring but otherwise grand.

Ps might loo a bit weird being a top banded mech and not a bottom banded. Don't see that so much nowadays, modern retro!

Agree with bobmac re height. Cable it up and set to big ring to check for the gap.

Cage looks a bit close to the tyre, so wind in the low limit screw and fine tune both limiters once you've got the chain on and you can go through the whole range.

Presumably, you've fitted either one or two BB spacers on the drive-side, depending upon your BB shell width of either 73 or 68mm respectively.

What's the frame? Steel? The chainstay bridge looks quite distinctive, which unfortunately doesn't help me! A guess would be Cotic or O-O? I like the colour too!

That looks likes the same mech I have on my Scandal.
Definitely too high and the limit screws need sorting.

Where's the cable coming from, the top? Just take it straight to the bolt.

Far too high- should be a mm or two clearance to the bug chairing when you push it over. No need to cable it up to check, just push the cage across towards the bug ring.

Only been in the game 4-5 years, 3 of which have been 1x9 so this is new to me!

modern retro!

This makes me rather happy!

Yup, really close, Mech not been used before, Limit screws will be adjusted!

73mm I believe, No I haven't, I did think it looked like it could do with a spacer.

Will get on top of it tomorrow 🙂

Massive thanks for the help peeps!

Sounds like you're well on the way 🙂

You may well need one spacer on the left (NDS) of the cranks to help reduce end-float or whatever the crank/bike term is.

It's missing a chain.

It's missing a chain.

Chain fell apart when I removed it! Really bendy in the wrong direction bendy!

Replacement tomorrow!

1x9 has made me lazy at checking on the little things 😐

I'm starting to wish I'd manned up and stuck with 1x9!

Chain shortened, via Park Tools Largest Cog Largest chainring method.
However as you can see when I drop to the small chainring and small cog the chain tension fails miserably,

I never remember such issues prior to 1x9

Don't tell me I need a bottom chain tensioner?!

As you can see this hasn't changed much after sitting the mech in its correct place.

if it was me i`d take off the big ring and set the limit stops on teh mech to avoid overshifting. run a bash if you need a spacer for teh chainring bolts.

that rear mech a long cage? looks like the tensioner screw needs some work - chain still looks a bit long to me too

You'll never use small/small anyway, so if you only use the largest three sprockets you might be ok.

You do know that the 'big to big' sizing is done with the chain not running through the rear mech don't you?

If you do, then what he said about a longer cage mech.

Ah! would make sense!

How would that work with a 3x Shifter?

I believe its a short cage,
I will try the tensioner screw when I return home from work.....Tomorrow afternoon...Meh!

Yeah I figured as much but it's hardly the ideal set up.

Yup, all over that.

It would make perfect sense that I need a Long cage rear mech,
However this is not an option for me unless I can get hold of one for free,
That said I'm feeling a front mech is to much faff, I don't like faff,

I've never been strong at setting up gears and I'm feeling I should just MTFU and stick to the 1x9 until I can afford to do otherwise!

Thanks for the input peeps! 😀

You'd have a click that doesn't do anything. Assuming that you've adjuster the mech end stop screws that is. If not you'll have a click that drops the chain.

Long cage mech and a triple front mech, not "dual" (dual is for 2 rings, 1 bash)

I've recently gone back to 3x9, funnily enough, on a Dialled PA (although mk1)

FWIW, I have a full spectrum of gears available to me - if I want to pedal small/small or big/big, I can (although I don't, as I can use the gears properly)

So just finishing up on my back tracking to 1x9 and with the chain a little shorter than its predecessor, can I assume that this one or two links too short?
