Picked up a Trek/Gf 2011 Hifi 29er frame. Probably intending to run it 1x9 or 10 as normally ride ss.
Presuming 32 chainring and normal cassette will cover most eventualities.
Anyone else run 1x9 on full sus with success? Also I've run 1x9 on hardtail with existing ss chainring - will this still work with a 10 speed chain?
I run 1x10 on my full sus. Works fine apart from a slight amount of run on the chainguide.
1x9 giant reign. No issues.
Ta guys. So what about the front chainring - can I use a standard ss one for 10 speed?
I run a e13 32T ring up front, I don't think it was 10speed specific and I'm not totally sure it would matter?
why wouldn't it work?
Worry about singlespeed rings is that they are too wide for a 10 speed chain but I run a Middleburn Uno single speed ring with a 10 speed chain and it is fine. I run 1x on three bikes including a full suss with no problems.
Renthal SS ring on my 1x10. No problems at all.

Exactly! But it doesn't seem to be a problem.
Think I'll stick to 1x9 as already have an XT shifter.
10 speed chains are the same internal diameter as 9 speed, the rings are cross compatible.
I run 1x10 on my FS, 36t, 11-36.
Blackspire 32t ss no problems.
As said, generally single speed rings will be fine for 9 or 10 speed. Try with whatever cassette is there at the moment and see how you go.
I'd say 1x10 won't give you much over 1x9. One extra gear sure, but not a big deal I find. 2x10 is a different matter especially compared to 3x9.
What chainring is down to your preference and what you're likely to use, or what you can do without.
Have a play with Sheldon's gear ratio calculator, compare a 2x or 3x set up vs 1x and see what effect different chainring sizes give you.

p.s. you may want to adjust the chain length and tension to reduce the chance of the chain jumping off. You don't need so much slack as there's just the one ring up front. Though a proper single speed ring helps (don't get a ramped 'middle'!).
Not sure I agree, I think 10 speed (or rather the 11-36 cassette) has made 1x10 far more accessible. Can't say I noticed any real difference going from 2x9 to 2x10, but I'd not really thought about 1x9 previously, but find 1x10 spot on.
