Ok so for the third time in as many months my boy has ended up with his rear mech wrapped around his back wheel. This time was the worst yet - needed a new mech hanger, new rear mech, new rear cassette, new chain, new rear mech cable, back wheel straightened up.

So what is going wrong? Top stop is always set on the mech so it doesn’t go above to top gear on the cassette, so I assume something else is pulling the whole thing into the wheel, but what? The last twice it has happened after landing a fairly big jump. Should I be looking at a different gear set-up, currently 3 x 9 as it is used for everything- trails, road, fun park etc.

sounds like the chain is coming off somewhere (top of the cassette, front mech?) and then the mech is being dragged into the wheel as the chain gets caught or he starts pedalling again.

You could try a Bionicon C guide as fairly simple chain tensioner?

Thanks the Bionicon C guide looks worth a try. Any other tensioners that work with 3 ring cranks?
