Hi all,

My first post and it’s a cry for help! Ok it’s not that dramatic but here’s my issue:

I have a new Canondale Scalpel SE 2020 and christened it going over Cut Gate and back last week (awesome ride if you don’t mind a bit of hike-a-bike). Anyway after washing it I pushed it around to the garage and heard a rubbing noise, quickly finding the rear brake hose to be the culprit.

Where the hose comes out of the BB it loops down and up to the fixing on the chain stay. I assume the cable was out too much causing it to rub on the tyre.

I pushed the cable back in and added some tape to prevent cable run as it was now much closer to the BB. I attempted to unscrew the hex nut down there I assume is to hold the cables tight but it just turned around (I was light on it and have a torque wrench). It doesn’t unscrew out, the rear derailleur cable is in tight but the brake hose can be moved in and out easily.

Is the hex nut for holding the cables?

Is it meant to unscrew all the way out?

Is the fitting faulty?

Any tips on cable routing down there?

I really don’t want to send it back and be without the bike it’s my second bike as the first (not a cd scalpel) had an issue with the rear brake mount and I didn’t want to wait 6 months for a new one so changed to this one...

TIA

I hope the pictures show below, if not some direction on how to attach images 😂

Outers are too long. Is there no way you can pull them through ?.

Failing that it's zippies or duct tape.

Hi dyna-ti

Yes I can pull it through easily and there is loads of excess at the front... I can get the hose to not touch the tyre by pushing it through but the hex bolt doesn’t do anything to hold the cable in place (maybe it’s not supposed to and it’s just there to secure the cable fixing).

You think a bit of tape around the seat stay and a cable tie to pull it away from the tyre?

This is why I hate frames with cables looping under the bb shell, awful design.
The bolt just holds the cable guide in place and should come out, tightening wont make it grip the cables tighter, it's in two pieces held together by a little screw.
The manual is downloadable on the website, if you haven't already done so.

The hex bolt is probably just to hold the frame mount. Easy solution would be push it through the downtube and pop a cable tie up at the head tube or wherever it comes out to stop it coming back down. Proper solution would be to shorten hose.

I wouldn't shorten that hose any more than it appears in the pic.. you need some length as the rear triangle moves.
What I would do however is to undo the caliper and rotate it 1 turn CCW looking from the back of the bike to rotate the hose outwards at the BB shell.
Also, with using that internal uption for your shifter cable?

Thanks for your input everyone,

Robo89 I agree it’s a terrible design, and I have the manual but it wasn’t clear regarding if the bolt was to secure the cable or just the fixing.

iainc, BearBack, I have loads of cable slack at the top so I could shorten it but make sure I leave at least what is at the bottom end for movement.

BearBack I’m not sure what you mean by rotate the Caliper, do you mean rotate the hose at the caliper? I understand the logic, so the hose bends away from the tyre more. As for the internal option on the shift cable... why didn’t they set it up internally originally!! But yes I plan to when I next need to either change the cable or I’ve ran out of other jobs to do.

Thanks again guys

If you unbolt the caliper and turn it with the hose still attached it will introduce twist in the hose. Twist it in the direction that makes the hose push outwards away from the tyre.
No need to bleed anything then either.

^^ Excellent idea. Who hasn't been annoyed by twisting hoses ?. Always wants to act on the caliper as you try to center and tighten up the mounting bolts.
Finally get to use that force to an advantage 😀

I sometimes wonder if the designers of today's bikes have even ridden one. There always seems to be some flaw or other or oversight.

Some frames use a plastic spacer to put between the gear cable and brake hose to keep them appart under the bb.
