You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
All there is left is a ribbed bit sticking out a few mm, a bit like the end of a hex key. This needs to be rotated 180 degrees to release the wheel but I can't get enough purchase with pliers. Is there a secret way of getting the wheel off in this situation?
Undo the knurled nut at the other end of the axle? Pliers should be able to grip it.
No, the plastic nut thing the other side is just going round and round without undoing
pics please?
Mole grips will be the right tool for this job (for once).
Mole grips - if you don't have a pair already it's time to buy one.
Some old ones take a torx key.
Sorry, you'll have to manage on your own. He's busy fretting about his Passat/trees etc 🙂
Just ride it with disc brakes. It'll fall out and you'll die, you know!
Can't get molegrips to grip either...

if the nut on t'other en is spinning, the axle's turning. Make sure that the broken end is held still, too.
If it is cup and cone you might be able to use a cone spanner to tighten the bearings a tiny bit, which will loosen the QR. Failing that I'd probably cut off the nut end and drill out the thread.
Done it! Found some smaller molegrips and applied superhuman strength.
Thanks for all your advice!!
