Hi all,

I wonder if someone can help me. I'm looking at organising a long weekend away mountain biking with a few mates. We're all road bikers/commuters so do plenty of miles but haven't really mountain biked. I started off looking at the Afan Forest as there seemed to be a few trails, places to stay, hire bikes, etc. The thing I wasn't sure about though was whether the routes there (they're all classified as red routes) would be too technical?

Can anyone give me an idea whether they'd be ok or whether I'd be better looking at places with blue routes? Any suggestions on where to go, routes, etc also gratefully received.

Cheers,
Aggi

red too tricky? - maybe/probably.

it's hard to predict; i've had noobies embrace the challenge with enthusiasm, but i've also seen them fall apart with a total sense of humour failure.

(and crash a lot)

you will be able to pick up maps, which will show you where shortcuts are. if you all feel up for it, i reckon you should give it (the red routes) a go, but don't be ashamed to divert onto the blue routes instead.

in my humble opinion, the glentress blue is one of the most fun trails i've ridden anywhere. lots of easy swoopy corners through the trees, it's like riding a starwars speeder-bike.

(feel free to add your own sound effects - it's almost compulsory)

[color=blue]If you're set on Wales take a look at Brechfa - the Green/Blue route is fairly easy technically (fair bit of steady climbing though) but still great fun to ride as fast as you dare.

Agree with the above comments.
I ride Afan regularly but I think its a bit dodgy taking a bunch of mtb beginners there.
All the descents there require some degree of mtb skill.
Its fairly rocky too.
The blue at Brechfa is a cracking route even for experienced riders who just do it quicker.
There is a bit of climbing but I doubt it will be a problem for a group of fit roadies.

yup agree with giving Brechfa a go, the red route there isn't as rocky as Afan and there aren't any drops etc from what I remember but there is a fair amount of climbing which should be ok for you guys.

Thanks all for the advice. We're not particularly set on Wales, it just seemed to have the websites with the most info for someone who doesn't know much.

I'll have a look at Brechfa, although I couldn't spot any bike hire around there on my first glance. Another place I was looking at was Brecon which seems to have a wider variety of trails if anyone has any experience of that?
