Hey,

got a bit of an issue with my cassette. Noticed a lot of play so thought I would check out what's going on. It was fully tight so not loose. I started to undo it, but the top cogs didn't move but the internal did. I noticed that it ended up getting tighter and then went ping. I had a look under the cassette to see what was going on and the hub was unscrewing. It gets to the point where it should come off, but as the cassette is still there it pings back into the thread of the hub.

Now I don't know how to get the small cogs to budge so I can remove it? As every time I try to undo it it just starts the hub being unscrewed? I've tried a bit of WD40 on the small cogs, but that hasn't done anything.

Is there some other technique I can do to get it to come off properly without the hub unscrewing? I can fully tighten it all up, but there is some mad play on the hub. If that's shot, would like to at least rescue the relatively new cassette.

Cheers in Advance.

Rob

Sorry, struggling to understand what you have tried. You are using a chain whip and cassette tool aren't you? Quick demo here at 20 seconds

what type of cassette/freehub is it? HG, XD or Microspline? and what brand hub is it mounted on?

Sorry, it's a SRAM 11 speed 🙂

so mounted on an XD freehub rather than a HG? they do both fitments in 11 speed.

Guessing XD from what you have described. in which case its a 1 piece cassette that unscrews as a whole. if the sleeve is unscrewing and the casette is not moving off the body then potentially the largest cog is jammed on its spline (the only one that has a spline on that cassette)

I've had similar and ended up having to use a dremel to dissect the cassette to salvage the freehub. in my case though the cassette tool splines on the cassette just fell apart when any amount of force was applied.

from what you said, the ping sound sounds quite like a thread stripping. hard to know without seeing it.

you could try unscrewing again and applying a little force to the largest cog to try levering it away from the spoke in the direction of it coming off as you unscrew, might help get it over teh potential stripped thread, see if that helps. if you get it off, make sure you check the freehub and cassette for damaged threads before re-fitting otherwise you are in for the same in reverse.

Yup, when the small cogs usually move they don't The hub starts to unscrew as I can see the thread near the wheel underneath the cassette as I unscrew it.

If it's XD, are you sure it's not the threads on the XD body that you can see?

XD driver body

If so, it sounds like the cassette is just stuck on the splines. Can you take the axle out and get the body off completely? If so you may be able to carefully grab the body in a vice and then turn the cassette slightly with a chain whip to get it free.

I had the same with my sram xd, the ping is probably the hub coming away as you unscrew. Its a one piece cassette so not like shimano where the first few rings come off seperately. It's probably stuck on the splines, so after unscrewing a little tapping it off the splines from behind could work.

If it's XD and the freehub will come away from the axle, like a Hope hub for example, there may be a relatively easy solution (assuming I've understood your post...).

Pull on the cassette to remove cassette and freehub in one piece together.

Fit a couple of bolts into a vice such that you can fit them into the spaces on the reverse side of the cassette. This enables you to use the cassette tool without needing a chainwhip. The extra torque you can apply compared to when using a chainwhip is considerable.

Update.

Thanks guys. managed to get it off with a tap. Internal on the hub is busted up. I had noticed a strange grind on the last few rides, but thought it was my BB.

Cassette survived so new hub time!

cheers for the advice
