I have a SC Blur Classic from 2003 which is my main bike and i love it.

However, whilst out the other day, one of the cranks broke in two, its the one on the (3x) chainrings side.

I'm struggling to find a replacement crank as it needs the 4 arm spider attachment, see pic below. Originally it was a Raceface Turbine (forged). The bike uses an Isis bottom bracket if that affects anything!

Can anybody help me with what exactly i need and more importantly where i can get the part from?

Otherwise, it looks like my only option is to upgrade the groupset which is going to be costly, but cheaper than buying a new bike, which i dont really want to do!

Amazed that you’ve had an Isis BB last that long! You might be able to find something on Retrobike? If going for something of similar vintage, I’d look for Shimano cranks.

How did you get an Isis crankset to last that long?

I don't think there are many Isis cranks being sold today (probably on ebikes).

Problem you might have is that your chain/cassette might have worn in/mated to that crankset.

You can go 1x quite cheaply (it's much easier to pick the right gear).

But pretty much any bottom bracket and crank can be fitted to the bike so just means looking for what you want.

Edit to say: need a new crank, no saving that.

Your pic doesn't appear to work for me but, the worst situation is you'll need a new crankset and bottom bracket to match.

Shouldn't need a full groupset by any means!

Most will work with a 9 speed set up, which I am guessing yours is.

If funds are tight, you could look to a second hand Shimano crankset and btm bracket. Should be able to get one for £50 ish or so on ebay or a wanted ad on this forum.

Might get lucky with somebody having an ISIS splined crankset their not using too.

Don't turbine cranks have a lifetime warranty? You'd need a new bottom bracket still.

If you're looking for a 9 speed triple, I have some shimano stuff in the spares box if you want to message me.

Personally I'd source a second hand triple Hollowtech crankset with the same bolt spacing, buy a new BB to go with it, and continue using the old rings if everything is still ok together. Then go 1x using the same cranks when the current drivetrain karks it. Alternatively, buy something like this plus a BB, swap your old chainrings onto it, keeping or selling the new ones.

It'll be a BSA threaded BB so you can have anything from square taper to HT2 or even DUB (if you want to experience true unreliability).

I'd be inclined to ditch ISIS and go HT2...

As above you just need a triple chain set. There are lots of options

Spa cycles will sell you a square taper chainset and bottom bracket for not crazy money

They may even have cranks that will take those rings

I did that to a set of isis turbines too.
I stood up to power up a hill and ping, driveside crank snapped in two.
I got an updated set of x-type deus cranks with bottom bracket under the lifetime warranty.
I needed proof of purchase to claim the warranty through the shop I bought them from.

snap

If the chainrings are 104 / 64 mm PCD then this Thorn one should work. SJS also have loads of triple chainsets on their site (with rings) that would suit. New bottom bracket might be need too.
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/cranks/150-thorn-10464-pcd-triple-crankset-mk2-black/

To check chainset PCD I find Sheldon Browns crib sheet useful. He also has info on BB sizing etc.

I've got some FSA isis 4 bolt in good condition somewhere in the loft, if you're in the uk I can post them Monday for a tenner. you'll need an old school crank extractor to get yours off.

I'd be looking at going HT2 rather than buying into older standards like square taper - and I say that as someone who used to be very wedded to the standard. The chainset I linked above is standard 4-bolt spacing but HT2. I've been running a similar set of Deore cranks on my MTB for the last 7 years.

Yes, that one that montgomery linked to would sort it out. Or you could switch to a double if you don't need the big ring much. I run my old 9-speed bikes with 26-36 doubles.

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

Naively, i had thought all i needed to do was remove the crank from the chainring using the 4 fixings and fit a new one, if i could find one!

I cant remember when i last had parts on the drive train changed. It might be prudent to change the chainrings, cassette, jockey wheels and chain when i sort this out, so everything is back to a known good condition.

Id also thought about changing to a SRAM GX Eagle groupset with a new BB, which was where my original comment about costly came from.

@montgomery: thanks for the link but i note there isnt a 175mm available at the moment. Would there be any noticible difference between 175mm and 170mm? Id need a new BB and also a crank for the other side?

@Endomick: I am in the UK. Is this just the drive side crank? My cranks are 175mm, is yours the same?

I’d take one of the cheap options people have lying around spare that they’re willing to give you as first choice.

Other than that I think you can still get Shimano triples - go with one of those and ht2 bb. When you decide you want to change the whole lot and go 1x you can run a narrow wide ring on the middle ring position of said Shimano cranks.

If you do decide to replace the whole lot and want a wide range and a cassette that’ll fit on your rear freehub (a Gx Eagle Cassette needs a different freehub - as does shimano 12 speed) then the m5100 deore 11 speed is a decent option on a budget.

The m5100 shifter and mech are sensibly priced. You can use and Shimano or Sunrace 11-50 11 speed cassette, pretty much any 11 speed chain (Sram X1 always seemed a good balance of quality vs price) and any crank of your choice that fits your bike / can run a narrow wide 11 speed chainring.

@hb1966 it's both arms, 175mm, probably got some rings as well but I can't check until tomorrow as I'm not at home.

I came on to make the same offer as endomick. Fairly sure a set of isis cranks in the shed. They came off a 2006 bike when the bb died. So probably late 2006! I know I treated myself to shimano deore lx and a hope bb. Both of those still going strong and in use. Bb bearings changed once.
Anyway it is complete with rings in good condition 175 arms (both), happy to post or you can collect from Sheffield if able.
In your shoes though I’d make the jump to ht2.

Go to the BETD website and/or call them on Monday; would be surprised if they can't help.
SJS as above is a good shout

I have the same Turbine cranks from my similar-era Santa Cruz, do you want them?

I would say, having upgraded a similar vintage bike to 1x9, if you are going to replace the drivetrain do mech and shifter too, and go 11 or 12 speed. It works out not that much more expensive in the end, and should all play nicely together rather than a bodged together 9 speed with a hanger extender!

Oh, and Amazon narrow wide chainrings FTW.  Tenner a go, and a wide variety of sizes.

Nothing wrong with a drivetrain bodge. Just changed the 2002 octa/ISIS BB on my road bike to HT2 and compact crankset, and put a 9sp 11-36 XT cassette on the back w a Sunrace extender to allow me to keep the short cage ultegra 9sp mech.
All works dandy, and at least 50% cheaper than a full groupset change - and my knees are grateful.

I used the LBS to get the driveside BB out, it was well seized and a two man job to rotate the frame around the BB in a vice. The OP might need his LBS to sort that out on his similar vintage Isis
