My rear axle is squeaking, it's driving me nuts and I can't figure out what it is.
The noise is a squeak every wheel revolution, it occurs whilst pedalling and whilst freewheeling, and only under load (doesn't squeak in the workstand or lifting the rear wheel and spinning it)
The squeak starting occuring during a ride, no crashes or anything I don't usually put the bike through
Bike is a Transition Covert 2013, 142x12mm axle, shimano sm ax65 axle. Hub is pro 2 evo
This evening I tried the following:
Removed hub end caps, cleaned and greased
Removed dropouts, cleaned and gt85ed
Tried bolt up axle instead of shimano qr
Removed brake caliper
Greased axle and axle holes
Loosened axle
and after each step tried it, the squeak hasn't changed one bit
Any suggestions greatly appreciated as I cannot put up with a noisy bike and do not know what else to try!
Do you know it's the axle? I was convinced it was mine, turned out to be the mech hanger. clean and grease threads on that too.
Yep, my dropouts are all one piece with the hanger so did it all in 1. It's not the axle itself as I have tried a different axle, it's the axle interface somewhere, but I've greased it all! argh!
Any witness marks on the axle?
Must be axle/bearings from the description.
Not more than you would expect from 1500 miles of use, anodising hasn't even worn off.
Must be the bearings, but no play or grumbles was making me look elsewhere
I've bought new bearings for the hubs, however battering the hell out of the bike at BPW on Wednesday seems to have solved the issue!
On closer inspection bearings are rough though so I'll be changing them anyway
