Can someone help?
I've got a noise coming from my chain/gears when under load.
The bikes a 2011 Orange P7 hardtail.
When the chain is under load in lowest gear it makes a terrible clicking noise that echoes through the frame. I've replaced the BB as i thought it was that but no joy. I've stripped the hubs and regreased the bearings and also stripped and greased the jockey wheels but still the noise is there. I have also checked the hanger for cracks as i recently had a very slight off and the bike got dropped that side but nothing is obviously damaged/cracked/out of alignment. I can even hear it if the bikes inverted and i just pedal it with my hands and put my ear next to the frame. If i push the derailer slightly forwards so the chain is a little slack on the bottom then the noise stops. Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers
is the gear indexing spot on? ive noticed on my 2008 p7 that the indexing can bo 'ok' on the smaller sprockets, but its out by the time it gets up onto the largest 2 or 3 sprockets.
Is it a Hope rear hub? Broken pawl springs make a really bizarre noise.
has the sliding dropout slipped on one side?
Is the click from a chain pin rubbing on the front mech?
Worn or damaged pins in rear mech from your off putting mech out of index-had this after a minor off that bent XT shadow mech plates and knackered pin/bushing on the elbow of the mech.
Thanks for the replies. I'll try to reply to all in one fell swoop.
Firstly not sure how to check the gear indexing but i assume this is checking that the derailleur and cassette gears are all inline through the range? If so then yes, they are all spot on.
Secondly the hubs are Shimano. I've undone the allen bolt holding on the freehub and removed it. Checked it for play and noise and both are o.k.
Chain is running true and no pins appear out of alignment.
I'm probably going with Suggsey's idea that there's something wrong with the derailleur but to be honest it was the slowest lowside drop on gravel when i came off. The only damage was the slightest scuff to the side of my DMR v8's, not a mark on the rear mech.
The noise isn't from the pedals as i stripped, checked and regreased these aswell.
I'll check the dropout again but failing anyone else coming up with more suggestions might have to go with a new rear mech. Thanks all.
I had that on my Spicy (well similar) .So far i've had new pawl springs etc wheel bearings (Hope Pro 2) ,cassette, chain, chainrings, mech hanger, bearings in the roller on the chain device ,new gear cables and outers .Think noise is gone , bloody hope so aint much else left !
Have you got access to another rear wheel you could put on the bike ? If the sound is still there with a different wheel then you can cross the hub off the candidates list.

Was it making the clicking noise before you had the off? Sounds like the rear mech cage may be just catching on the spokes possibly due to a slightly misaligned hanger.
Sum + 1
Any good workshop have a tool to check the hanger.
Also depending on rear mech check the that the end of the gear cable is away from the wheel, as you go to lower gears on some mech the cable get close and with a little flex when putting the power down might make it touch.
Thanks again for the replies.
It's difficult to describe the noise but for anyone who has replaced a knackered BB then you'll know exactly the noise i'm trying to describe.
It sound like someone has replaced the BB grease with gravel. A cross between clicking and graunching echoeing through the frame.
I've checked the cable ends etc so don't think it's that. Might try a different back wheel tonight first.
Failing that a might let Freewheel in Nottingham take a look seeing as though their the Orange dealer.
Will keep you all posted with the cause when i find out myself! 🙂
I was going to suggest mech hanger given that it doesn't do it on all sprockets? Sounds a lot like when I bent mine - the noise I think was partly due to the chain not meshing quite correctly, even though the shifting was okay (although not perfect to be fair). It was not obvious that it was bent when eye-balling it, and it had actually bent back as well as slightly inwards. Will be interested to hear what the issue is!
Have u tried the b-tension screw on mech.Should b the single screw near pivot on mech.Sounds like the mech is sitting too close to the sprockets in the low gears. This will make a bit of a racket! Try screwing it in and see if it makes a difference.
Thanx Max
Well thanks for all the suggestions but now time for an update!
I'VE FIXED THE FAULT!
As it turns out we were all wrong, me included.
First i tried swapping the wheel out with one from my other bike.
Noise was still there but slightly different.
Put the original wheel back in and went to Orange dealer. Much head scratching later we both decided all that we could do was start replacing drivetrain parts starting with the cheapest first.
I duly ordered a new Shimano HG73 chain (deciding to upgrade slightly from the stock version) and a new Shimano HG61 Cassette (again going for a slightly better version).
I swapped the chain out first and hey presto noise has now completely gone. In for a penny in for a pound i decided to fit the cassette aswell to keep the wear rate the same and stop any gear change mishaps and now it's like a new bike.
Thanks for all the advice peeps. 😀
