Hi,

If anyone can help with the following two questions that would be great.

1) If a TCX file I've uploaded has unpaved roads in it do I need to change the 'unpaved roads' setting in Map and Route settings? E.g. what would happen when I got to the unpaved section if the settings said 'avoid unpaved roads'?

2) Last time I tried to use the turn by turn directions it seemed to stop working when i went off course. When i was back on the route the Garmin continued to try to send me back to where i had originally gone off course (which was miles away and I didn't seem able to tell the Garmin to just continue from where i was currently at?).

Cheers for any help.

1) As far as I recall (having used the 800 and the very similar Touring and Touring Plus), results may be mixed depending on device and type of maps and maybe even how the route file was constructed. I would recommend testing the theory using short routes you've created near your current location: I seem to recall my original Touring Plus tended to deviate from my planned route, my Touring tended to stay on it, and the 800 I forget.

2) Sounds weird, I never had that. There is an options for off-course recalculation in the menus somewhere; you should have the options of auto, never or prompt. Sounds like yours is set to auto, but I'd normally expect it to navigate you forwards along the route rather than back.

When it comes to Garmin's navigation, whether it's the calculation of the route or what the device does as it tries to guide you along it, there always seems to be about a million factors which influence the algorithms they use, and they leave it up to you to try to figure it out. The only real advice is that you should do a few dry runs before you need to rely on the routing, and that once you've got a system that works you should stick with it.
