Hi all

I have a Commencal Meta Trail. It came with a 10 speed SRAM x9 single shifter system.

The rear cassette range is 11 - 36 with an additional E-Thirteen 42 cog on it.

I now need to replace this and would like to keep this the same. Getting hold of the e-thirteen cog is easy but I cannot seem to find an 11-36 SRAM 9 speed rear cassette.

I can however find a 10 speed 11 - 36 range. Would I just buy this one and remove a cog so I can fit the large 42 cog on the inside?

If so which cog may I remove?

Thanks

Yes, I believe this is how it is generally done. Not sure which cog is best removed though. Personally, if I wanted that range I'd just buy a Sunrace 11/42 cassette.

Great, no compatability issues with SRAM?

Sounds like a great idea...

If your shifter is 10spd, I really don't recommend faffing with a 9spd cassette. Have you done with successfully before ?

As I guess you know, you can only remove the loose sprockets as depending on the model, most are part of a spider arrangement. Typically with something like XT that has 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-36 people remove either the 15 or 17 sprocket and try to tolerate that jump in gear ratios.

I realise this won't help, but I was only able to get a decent range of gear ratios via either 2x10 or 1x11 and not 1x10 - in other words I didn't think it was worth spending time/money trying to get what I needed from 1x10 (the only benefit was the narrow/wide chainring). Having said that, I'm sure it's still possible to have 99% fun with 1x10. I still do some cracking rides with my old 1x9 bike (34T x 11-32).

As someone mentioned, if the shifter is 10spd wouldn't the sunrace 10spd 11-42 be a great and simple solution?

Sorry if I missed something in your post op that negates that option. I'm a bit tired at the moment.

Thanks for the responses, indeed the Sunrace 11-42 is the best solution and not too expensive.

For a final question (sorry!) but can anyone recommend a chain for this, or would any SRAM 10 speed chain do?

Thanks as ever

Everyone will give you a different answer but I am a fan of SRAM chains personally. 🙂

Doesn't have to be a SRAM chain.

Can't go wrong with this, decent price too - Shimano XT

I've used SRAM, Shimano XT, KMC and YBN chains over the past few years. Mainly on a 1x10 set up using SRAM X0 mech/shifter, XT cassette, Hope N/W chainring.

The YBN didn't last too long, and I'm now back on KMC.

I generally use KMC chains for everything apart from SRAM 1x11 where I tend to use PCx1's for no good reason.

As above, to make an expanded cassette you begin with a high level 10sp cassette that you can dismantle to remove a 17 or 15t (usually) from without drilling pins out. You then add your expander behind and Robert is your cousins' father.

The Sunrace mentioned is much less hassle and probably preferred.

If you are doing this, you may want to weigh up whether an extra £100 to replace shifter and mech and go 11sp is worthwhile. If you're happy with 1x10 it probably isn't, but it's worth bearing in mind.
