Hi,

My relaively new Caddx is creaking when I apply pressure/power to the pedals i.e. steepish uphill. Creak sounds like its coming from the chainset area. My gut says it's the chanirings.

So, I stripped down the whole chainset and BB and inspected, cleaned, regreased and put back again.

Creaking went away for about 3 or 4 rides. Now back again.

Anyone else have this problem? If so , what did you do to fix it?

Oh, and no jetwashers go near the bike.

Cheers for any help/advice.

What about peddle bearings? Strip down and a re-grease or stick another pair on as a test and see if the noise disappears.

Gotta be the BB30 bearings surely?

Assuming the rings are evenly tightened, I’d be looking at the pressfit B.B. I think.

Loads on here about creaking bb30s - some old threads will give you possible solutions. It seems to be the spindle / bearing interface that is the usual culprit so you can try loctite and things like that over the surface.

I have a few bb30s, including the same bike as you, and generally have no problems. But if you don't get it sorted with a few of the common fixes I think you need to make a quick decision to bin it off and get an adapter - sucks to get a new crankset but you can't have your bike creaking like a shithouse door.

I had read lots on the net saying it was common with BB30's.

Bit more googling and it might be that I need to tighten up the left hand crank more (it's not on that tight which was how it came from the shop).

@Gary Lager ..i agree about wanting to fix it. The creak really annoys me. What's the adapter thing you mention (if I can't fix it otherwise)?

Just got a fsa bb30 to 24mm adaptor for my F29. Wasn’t creaking but I’ve got a xtr crank I want to use on it. Bonds into the B.B. shell. Note that once fitted to a carbon frame it cannot be taken out. This one

You can also get some simple shims that just slot in to the BB and will step it down to a 24mm spindle for a shimano crankset, wheels manufacturing make some. No idea how well they work but looks like a simple solution.

Persevere with trying to sort it just now, though - works nae bother for the majority of folk. I actually prefer the simplicity of it where you can just knock out / press in a bearing as and when.

fsa bb30 to 24mm adaptor

ISTR that some Cannondales have a ridge inside the BB shell that prevents that type of adaptor being fitted. Otherwise, it's a great solution if you want something permanent IMHO.

They are awful things and will probably creak more than the BB. (The bearing spacing on a 24mm spindle is wider than the BB30, so the loads on the bushes are offset which makes fretting and creaking innevitable.)

(I replaced both the bushes and the BB30 on my Diverge with the FSA adaptor and a Shimano threaded BB at ~3000 miles. Only ~1100 miles on it so far, but I don't anticipate any problems - it just seems a much better arrangement.)
