My ancient M4 is broken beyond repair so I'm looking for a replacement. It's for the bike I use on longer faster descents so I'm looking for something with good power and resistance to overheating.
I've had a look at what's available on CRC and I'm wondering about the difference between the M4's and the 2 piston designs. Am I just as well getting a new M4 or would the other designs suit my needs too?
Thanks.
-hope +shimano

Thanks for that 🙂 My bike would look a bit daft with a Hope front brake and a Shimano back brake now wouldn't it? 😕
M4 front, X2 rear and rotors to suit use?
Winstanleys are cheaper than CRC for Hope brakes but don't always have the stock.
Shimano. I spent years with hope(less) m4s. Went to shimano, would never go anywhere else now. Ultimate reliability, great feel and stopping power.
If you don't want hope front/ shimano rear get a set of shimano deore they'll cost the same but will work better.
just reposting this link:
if you scroll down, and zoom in, there is an interesting graph to make some comparisons with.
+1 for hope, sounds like a V2 is the brake for you.

Ditch the hope front then 🙂 Shimano all the way!

I use M4 front and X2 rear, very happy and never an issue with braking power.
I use an M4 up front and find an X2 perfect for the rear.
Has anyone mentioned shimano also make brakes but are cheaper yet? ... 🙄
Thanks for the suggestions folks. I could go for Shimano but I have a load of oil for the Hopes and some spares. Apparently the Hopes have better feel too?
That chart was interesting reading Smatkins thanks. What do you guys with the X2's weigh as it looks like they're a lot less powerful than the M4's. I'm about 13.5 stones.
I'm about the same weight as you .
X2 Tech Evo's rear, M4 Tech Evo's front - 16.5 Stones light I am. X2's still plenty powerful for rear unless you like to lock the rear up at every available opportunity. Trouble is you'll definately want new Hopes for front once you feel the X2. The lever feel and modulation is way improved over older Hopes.
So no problems with the X2's overheating then? I'm planning to do some big descents this year like Ben Lomond for example.
