Hi, new to the forum and 1x10, and in need of a bit of help. Ive recently converted my bike to 1x10 and im using a double crank with the narrow /wide chainring on the outer chainring position however on the inside of the spider if that makes sense? The chain-line in my opinion is too far towards the smaller sprockets.
When backpedaling with the bike on a stand on the biggest sprocket it will fall down onto the next (smaller) cog. I see it as having two options either spacer/ shim the chainring more into the centre of the cassette by using spacers on the spider OR remove one of my drive side spacers off my BB and put it on the none drive side instead so I’ve got two on the none drive side and one on the drive side, will this damage my brand new BB or cranks at all? Cheers
Either of those options will work, both if it's waaaay out!
Hi pegmondo, welcome aboard!
Making either of those changes won't damage the BB or cranks, just make sure there's enough space between the chainring, crank arm and chainstay for the cranks to rotate smoothly.
Personally I'd shift the BB spacers first as it's relatively quick & simple compared with shimming the ring.
Have fun.
either will work, but do you actually need to......on my 1x10 with a double crankset in the outer position, it's lined up with the straightest chainline on about 6/7 but those gears (5-6-7-8) are the ones that are used most for singletrack riding. The climbing gears (2/3/4) are a bit cross chained but tolerable and the bail out gear still works but is relatively rarely used.
So I'm happy to compromise the gears I don't use as much to optimise the ones I do.
Thanks for the replys guys, i moved the bb spacers about which gives me a slightly better chainline but think im still going to shim / spacer/ washer the chain ring anouther 2mm inwards for the optimal centre line( as i do just a much climbing as i do descending) i plan on using spacers off ebay abd just get some longer chainring bolts. The chainring is a snaggletooth 30T and has threads that the chainring bolts screw directly in to. Can you see any problem with what i plan to do? Thanks in advance
I did exactly this last week - had to move one spacer over from driveside to non-driveside (73mm bb shell so only one spacer), then space the chainring a further 2mm inboard.
SJS for chainring spacers - even with their postage it works out cheaper than ebay.
If it's an XT M785 double you're using, the chainring bolts for the inner ring will fit on the 2mm spaced outer ring fine - saves you buying more!
Its a deore hollowtech 2 crank i dont think the bolts for the granny ring are the same as the thread on my snaggletooth chainring but not sure il have to check that,
