Hi, im a bit of a technical duffer.....need a replacement middle ring for Marin Mount Vision 2009 5.8, found what i need on Chain Reaction but it says "Middle Ring to suit LX and XT hollowtech 1 cranks (Not hollowtech 2)".....not sure if its ok - bike still has original cranks on, ant idea if its ok or not.
thanks
The difference is the newer chainrings are the carbon reinforced ones which won't fit the older chainset, you want the plain alloy ring which from your descripsion sounds like the right one.
allyp,
The ring for HT-I will fit HT-II cranks without any modification, but will not be supported on the crankarm shelf, just the 4 bolts.
This is probably not important for most riders.
A ring for HT-II will only fit earlier HT-I crankarms if you machine away under each hole to let it fit the crankarm shelf.
This is easily done by competent cyclists, but not if you are unsure.
I would not do this to a composite middle ring on newer XTR, XT and SLX.
Hope this helped...

Allyp, to start with abandon the overpriced CRC and go to rosebikes for a start (just beware they have a £5 delievery charge, but even with this they tend to be cheaper than CRC/wiggle/Merlin).
Off-hand I can't categorically deny what Baz says (As I have some 'carbon' SLX ring to be fitted to an old M760 chainset but haven't yet done it - still destroying the old un for as long as possible) but personally I think he speaking out of his bottom (no disrespect but I think he's wrong).
Normally as per Paul, you might need to machine (file) off some of the inner tabs to make them fit, but that's it, make em fit and away you go..
