Ok I can start with the Nicky line from Harpenden to Hemmel Hempstead but hopefully someone here can suggest some nice route that takes me from there to the Chilterns and some good off road route that takes in a good chunk of them heading in the direction I want to go. I dont have a GPS but am half decent at reading maps. Please suggest some pointers if you have some experience of these areas. Thanks.
Surely you would want to pick up the chilterns in Luton, that or use the Grand Union from Hemmel?
Grand Union would be nice, actually, I might do that from my place one weekend with the missus.
Really depends on the weather and time of year. You can ride lots of great trails in the Chilterns when its dry. Then get yourself to Wallingford, then follow the river to Oxford. Do it when the nettles and brambles are dead as a lot of the tow path along the river can be overgrown. Anything else from the Chilterns to Oxford can be hit an miss field edges, the towpath is nice (and its flat)
I used to live in Harpenden and now live 5 miles up the road.
Id start by heading out Kinsbourne green , Markyate, studham, Ashridge, then out to Berkhamsted.
Thanks for the suggestions. I did the ride today and went by Nicky line, then Grand union canal, then Wendover arm of the canal to Wendover then by road to Longwick then Thame then followed National cycle route 57 to Oxford from there. Spotted on the way was a cycle route that goes from Princess Risboughrough to Thame and if I do it again I would pickup at Longwick which would have avoided the only really unpleasant bit, the Thame road. It was my first really long ride and took 4hrs 20mins moving time to cover 87km with a lunch break of half an hour.
For anyone planning similar routes i just found the Sustrans site which highlights what would be cycle friendly roads and tracks on their map. but doesnt include the towpath bits.
