Felt an odd flexing in my drivetrain today, turns out 4 of the 8 bolts holding the chainring to the spider of my SLX m7100 12sp set up are missing and a 5th is loose.

I have a security T15 torx bit somewhere (looks the right size) but the bolts look like they are non-standard. Has anybody manged to replace them? They are meant to be fixed and non-serviceable but looks like shimano screwed up here.

Over 2 years old so can't claim on warranty but frustrating as otherwise it is fine.

Cheers,

S

Interesting. I had the same thing this week. Well, in that the 2 bolts on 1 of my spider arms have come loose. Also M7100.

I can't help you with finding a replacement bolt but I can share in the frustration with their use of security torx (why? How is that helpful halfway through a bike ride?) and thank you for the reminder that I needed to nip mine up before I ride again tomorrow!

They def don’t look to be sold as a spare part as they aren’t listed on the exploded diagram.

If you can’t find a suitable replacement bolt, it’ll be new chain ring time.

Cheers, has a feeling that would be the answer. If they aren't meant to be removed why not use a rivet! ?

Get a Unite direct mount chainring and be done with bolts.

Just smack the security pin with a punch, take the now non-security T15 bolt out and buy some new ones from your local DIY place...

I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be permanent so should never have come loose in the first place and also why they are deliberately a weird size. You are just meant to replace the whole chainring.

They are there because it’s a steal outer ring on an aluminium carrier.

Have got them out now. 3mm of m3 bolt with what looks like blue thread lock on. Bolt has a stepped shoulder and low profile head. Very proprietary and very stupid design. Well done shimano...
