how do STW forumites.
Daydreaming today about a new bike in the new year. Decided to make the leap to a 29er, so suggestions please for an Alumium Full Sus 29er, over £1500 and under £2k, obvisouly the cheaper the better. If there is any others less than £1500 with good specs I would consider them as well of course. 🙂 My only other preference is that has space & mounts for a bottle cage as I prefer not to take the camelbak out for shorter rides.
So far all I've found is the specalised epic so plz help. Thanks.

This is one of my moon-on-a-stick daydreams too!

If you want a short travel alu 29er, then there are some interesting options:

Complete bikes for about £2k:
Orbea Occam 29er H30
BMC Fourstroke 29 fs03
Giant Anthem X 29
Canyon Nerve AL 29 (don't really like the look of the lower shock mount on this, but I am not an engineer)
Rose Dr. Z (I saw a review that suggested the handling isn't great on this - bit of a barge)

Self-build (frame only):
Titus Rockstar
Salsa Spearfish (good prices on these at the moment, but does anyone think that engineered flex in alu seatstays is a good idea? as above IANAE)

Over budget:
Cannondale Scalpel 29er (over budget if you want the one with the new Lefty)
Devinci Atlas
Intense Spider
Niner Jet9
Pivot Mach 429

Depends what riding you do, if you're racing XC your requirements are a bit different to someone doing regular Alps trips...
For my riding then the Anthem 29er and Trance 29er would be on the short list, the specs even look better VFM than last year's. Still waiting to demo the Trance but the Anthem is pretty well sorted for what it's designed for

Cheers Fuzzy, my riding is mostly XC and some (not major) downhill. Local woods & trails, cannock monkey about once a month. Trips up the lakes for the borrowdale bash, back o'skiddaw type of riding. I think short travel on the front would be about right.

Salsa Spearfish of course 🙂

Hargroves had a good deal on the Camber 29 recently.

Based purly on price and the level of kit you get for your money i'd be looking at the Canyon Nerve AL 7.9

I'm slightly biased, being a huge Giant fan, and having a few mates who ride Anthem 29ers i'd probably go for one of these. The 2013 bikes are actually looking good value:
x4 - £1,499 - http://www.shopgiant-bicycles.co.uk/3166/products/2013-giant-anthem-x-29er-4.aspx
x3 - £1,699 - http://www.shopgiant-bicycles.co.uk/3165/products/2013-giant-anthem-x-29er-3.aspx

You gotta have the mech hangers, I reckon all bikes should be supplied with a spare, Canfield brothers do this. It's not like you will never break it.
