You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I don’t overthink bikes and parts anymore. My 7 year old Stumpy is pretty much as it was when I first got it without any upgrades. I like buying a bike then riding it, not faffing around with it.
I’m thinking about replacing it on bike to work which will mean £3k cap. Will need to be from Tredz or somewhere that accepts Halfords scheme vouchers.
I just don’t know where to start.
I ride GT, Inners and tamer Golfie trails. Full sus needed but not too aggressive. Last couple of bikes have both been Stumpies.
Help me spend my money! Cheers.
Bird will accept the Cycle2Work vouchers (for a fee)
As will Balfes and MTB Monster
If you like Stumpjumpers, the new one is very good. I had the same model as you’ve got currently before it was stolen. The new one is considerably more capable but suits the pure trail category better than the evo models. I was also considering a Cotic Jeht and the new Trek Fuel ex, plus loads of others, bit it came down to what Tredz (I needed to use them because of insurance claim) couldn’t source them. I know what you mean about not knowing where to start - the 130-140 mm trail category is one of the most crowded, and most seem to review well these days. In the end sticking to what I know worked out well - Spesh always seem decent and although I’ve never needed it, their warranty and support is supposed to be excellent.
Yep, new Stumpy is definitely heading the shortlist just now. Nothing wrong with sticking with what you know.
Worth noting that the alloy bikes sub £3k are different to the carbon ones now in terms of suspension design - the alloy ones are still Fsr, the carbon ones are a flex stay design. Both review well, but I was referring to the carbon one earlier as that’s what I’ve got experience of - it’s definitely a fair bit different to my 2016 alloy one I had before, but I’m loving it!
I suspect carbon will be over budget for me
My new carbon stumpy is 4 days old and I got it on the nhs bike to work scheme. I don't have an old full sus to compare it to, but it's a great bike to ride.
Having had a quick look on the tredz website I think I’d consider:
Specialized Status 140
Orbea Occam
I guess the stump jumper but I just find it a bit vanilla. Same with that Merida one forty.
Shame the Nukeproof reactor pro 290 is just over budget - of the tredz options that’s the one I’d want.
If Bird take the same vouchers I’d get a Bird Aether 9 alloy with the best spec you can manage for the budget. Looking at a budget of £3k you could get an Aether 9 alloy in deep purple with a like select rc, deluxe ultimate shock, m1900 dt swiss wheels, deore 12 speed with slx cassette, formula Cura 4 brakes, 200mm bird dropper etc under £3k. That would be an excellent bike. Ideally I’d put a Lyrik ultimate rc2 on it and the formula mod coil shock but that takes you a few hundred over budget.
Sunset cycles accept Halfords vouchers. They have pretty decent discounts on Oranges at the minute.
