Can anyone tell me what freehub this part number is for:

1XHXAXN01074

It says 240s Shimano MTB on the bag but the standard 12mm end cap doesn't fit.

Yup, that's a standard, current 10-speed road/11-speed MTB ratchet freehub.

You're missing a few letters off the end though, SB would = stainless bearings, S.A. would = standard bearings.

Some 240 free hub bodies have a small plastic seal over the outer bearing, effectively the 'flange' on the spacer is in the freehub body, not on the end cap. If your end cap is also 'flanged' (and most are) then it won't fit.

Can you see all of the bearing face (usually a red dust seal) in the end of the freehub body (ie the bit that would face out if it were installed in the wheel), or is there a black spacer there?

Yep, can't see the bearing due to a cover/seal:

Does the spacer come out?

Yep, may be easiest to push the central, cylindrical spacer aside (from the back) and push the outer bearing out, which will bring the spacer with it.

Pleasure, flummoxed me some years ago, made worse by the fact my Bontrager wheels did need the additional spacer in the freehub!
