Decided to use this lock down time to swap the nice Uberbike headset from my Bossnut V1 to the 2020 Triple B, and the stock one from the Triple to the BN... what was I thinking?!?!?!?

Started on getting stuff off the BN.

1. The crown race pulled off and slides on by hand, no force/tool needed. That's not right is it?

2. The top bearing is stuck in the top cup and I cant get it out! I'm sure last time I took it apart to maintain it came out easily. How do I get it out without ****ing it? As its a ceramic bearing and in great condition being well looked after and not many miles on it, and I don't wan't to have to spend £20 on another, I don't want to screw it up getting it out.

3. I don't have a headset removal tool (yet!) so tried the suggested 'piece of wood and tap it out square' method. well tried that and it hasn't moved...at all... so I don't want to smash it too hard. Am I just being a bit too gentle with it?

All help/advice/abuse welcome.

1. Is it a split race with a cut in it ? If not then you may need a bit of coke shim, assuming you are pushing to bottom etc
2. Had that also . Tried using fork steerer to lever out ?
3. Hit it harder . I used to use a big screw driver , even on posh bikes , then bought the tool .

Thanks for the input,

The crown race is split so maybe its OK? (I never even knew about them til recently!)

Didn't think of trying the steerer, will try tomorrow.

Don't wanna wreck the cups so using a decent piece of wood pole, will try not being a pansy, will try that tomorrow too!

The bearing will come loose if you patiently make light taps with a flat screwdriver and hammer. Go around the circumference of the bearing until it starts to move mm by mm. It'll eventually pop out.

A brass rod us quite good for tapping out headsets. Not as hard as a screwdriver but hard enough to do the job. Wood might work but I think you'll want something fairly hard like oak, not a bit of soft wood dowel.

Do you need to take the bearing out, isn't it going back into the same cup?

Might have a look around site and see if we have some brass bar laying around, might be better.

@nickjb Yeah its gong back in the same cup but not sure if bashing the cup with the bearing still in it is a good idea!

Just put it back together and forget about it, if that's still an option.

Can do, but I cant buy the green cups any more as Uberbike don't have them in stock and haven't for a while so I cant have the bling on my Triple B! 🙁

(Partial) Success!

Both headsets out, Uberbike on the Triple (was a bit squeeky bumhole as they didnt pull straight to start!

Will be putting the stock one on the BN tomorrow. Think I was being too gentle (can't scratch it!)
