I have a Magic Shine MJ 858 that has suddenly decided to conk out. When I turn it on the LED illuminates just enough to make out high / low / strobe settings but only if you look directly at it. Is that the LED that’s dead? Something in the board on which it sits? Something else? The board has the marking ‘XM L2 16 A0’ but I can’t seem to find a replacement.

Whilst it’s not the world’s best / most expensive light, if it’s a simple fix then I’d prefer to get a soldering iron out instead of junking the lot. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It'll likely be the drive electronics, rather than the LED.

You can probably buy a replacement board & solder it in, if you can find a suitable one.

You'll need to know if its a driver that increases the voltage from the battery, or reduces it (buck or boost driver) and obviously it will need to fit into the available space.
Something from TaskLED might work?

Like this:

I've actually got a couple of B2Flex drivers (the old version of their B3Flex) that I was planning on building into my own light design years ago, but the guy who was machining the cases for me never actually got round to finishing them, so it all died on it's arse.

It'll be a buck driver, like the B2Flex Stumpy mentioned as they use a 2 cell battery.

First, confirm the battery voltage is correct, assuming you don't have the low battery warnings. Always better to test the easy stuff first!

Do you have a multi meter? You can then test the voltage to the LED when the high setting is selected. You will want about 3v on the LED. If not, the board is probably goosed. It is very unlikely you'll have the 3v there and LED has failed.
However, here is an LED you can surface mount in if needed...
XM L2
And a driver...I have only used TaskLED ones, they are the dogs danglies. I have some of the older BFlex V3 ones which will work too.

@stevied - I was gonna say no, as I still have my mind on doing a little project at some point.

BUT, I have just dug them out & there are 4 of them. I only really need two.

I'd be happy to sell you two of them. Drop me a PM & we can go from there.

Somewhat coincidentally while looking through some e-mails for TaskLED & Cutter electronics, I found your e-mails from that suspension linkage I modelled up for you years ago 🙂
