I've been getting knee pain mountain biking, but not whilst pedalling. It happens most often when I'm hopping, pumping hard or similar. The effected leg is my rear leg in my normal stance.

It also occurs off the bike if lunging / split squatting in the rear leg. No pain if it's the front leg in the lunge, or normal squatting etc.

Bit of a weird one that I haven't experienced before and doctor google isn't much help. I'm booked in to see a physio, but wondering if anyone else had experienced similar? What was the s diagnosis? What worked?

Thanks

If it’s happening when your leg is in the rear position, e.g when the hip is extended, it is is possibly a quad/hip issue manifesting as knee pain as the quadriceps crosses the knee and insets on the top of the shin.

Several other key muscles in the hip area that can trigger pain when in an extended position if they are tight

Many reasons this could be happening - imbalance, lack of stability etc.

could also be linked to glute/hamstrings issues

The physio will be best placed to diagnose and advise. Hope it gets better soon!
