Got a road bike with 10sp Ultegra/105 mix with a 11-30T on the back and 34/50 compact double. The rear mech is borked, the chain is stretched and it jumps in most gears. I want to replace the necessary bits, and preferably get a bit more low range at the same time.

I swear I spotted loads of info online this morning about Ultegra 10sp GS (medium cage) mech working with 11-34 cassettes. But now I can't find anything on it. Perhaps the stuff I I found was 11 speed.

So I can't find any Ultegra 10sp log cage online. Perhaps they don't exist.

Can I use a 10sp XT or SLX mech on the road bike? Or does it have different cable pull ratios?

Is there a significant difference between Ultegra cassettes and SLX/XT

I'm planning to get these chainrings:

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-chainwheel-105-50t.-10-speed-fc-5750-l-black-137893
any sensible looking 10speed chain.
I want a 11-34T cassette.
and a mech that will handle the 34 toth max and be compatible with my road shifters.

Will that work?

9speed or below is the MTB mech you're looking for with a 105 10sp Sti

Then you need to add a 1mm(?) spacer behind the 10sp cassette, IIRR

I’m almost certain your 10spd stuff is not compatibility with 10spd MTB, but someone I’m sure will confirm this.

You could look at Shimano GRX? The 10spd version of that is (2x) 11-36 with a compatible mech that I’m sure will use a shimano road standard 10spd cable pull (You will want to check, though).

I'm pretty sure that GRX400 has the modified 4700 cable pull. (i.e. it's an 11 speed derailleur).

The solution to this one is easy though, just use a 9 speed shimano mountain bike mech.

Sorry. I'm a bit dim. Why would that work? Is it because the pull ratio on s 9 speed MTB mech is the same as the PR on a 10 speed road mech?

Weird.

I ran a mixed group set for years.

Ultegra 10spd levers
XT 10spd 11-34 cassette
XT 9spd rear mech
CX70 cyclocross front mech
XT cranks with aftermarket 50-34 rings.

It was on a Singular Gryphon.

Worked fine.

(And Hope V-Twin brakes too)

Shimano historically was all interchangeable, 7,8,9 speed and 10spd road

When they introduced 10 SPD mtb they decided it needed to pull more cable to be reliable in the muck, so they went dyna sys pull ratio and the interchangeability ended.

So yeah as above find an 8/9spd mtb mech to suit a 10spd mtb cassette on road 10 shifters. XTR M950 is my fab.

The derailleur has no sense of pull ratio , that has to do with the spacing of the cogs on the cassette. What you need for cheapness simplicity and reliability is a Shimano deore M591 SGS , as said above it's compatible with just about any set up, controlled by hi/lo screws plus the B screw of course, and idot proof to boot.

get a road link/ rear mech extender and stick whatever cassette you want on the back. you'll need the extender, cassette and a new chain, keep your existing shifters. i've run an 11-40 cassette with no issues on an 11 sp road shifter using an extender
