I'm on the lookout for a new helmet having totalled the last one with a high speed otb face plant. As this and my previous similar accident left me with a sizeable headache I'm looking for something that might provide better protection. I'd like to know of your practical otb experiences, helmet choice and resultant effects.

My Bell Super definitely saved me after a bit OTB in the Pyrenees, and the extra coverage low down on the back of the head might have prevented some serious damage. Instead, I was only left with a slight headache.

Every crash is so different. I've had some nasty abrasions to my chin so maybe full face is a good idea. Then again I think my helmet with good coverage to the back of my head saved me some pain/cabbagefication when I landed pretty much flat on my back and put a bit of a dent in the back of the helmet. But then again I went out for a little ride around sandbanks and Poole quay and wound up not knowing where I was going or, er who am I? The crack in that helmet made me think it must have protected me from something but maybe mips is a good idea. It's so hard to choose isn't it? I'm eyeing up a bell super 2R as it appears to have everything but fate has a big part to play.

Is it a fullface you're after, considering the faceplant? Or a normal hat? Fullface has too many drawbacks for most people to wear for most rides but that's the only thing that'll protect your face.

I just recently got a Sweet Protection Bushwhacker, it's so nearly great... But it's pretty sweaty, and I find it interferes a bit with my glasses. Worth trying out though- it's got really good coverage without feeling like a bucket. I'm back in my Fox Striker most of hte time- I rate the Striker and Fox customer service is great but it does feel a bit XC. I've smashed one to death and belted another, they did good though.

Actual degrees of protection are unfortunately impossible for us to know without standalone tests... The CEN for helmets is pathetically low so it takes little effort for a helmet to exceed it. What you really want is actual figures for force transmitted, deceleration and dwell time, survivability of hat etc. But it doesn't seem like there's an appetite for that in the market or the industry so we just buy ones we like the colour of, pretty much.

I'm an xc weekend warrior round the chilterns. Full face would probably be overkill for me but rear and side protection looks good. Like north wind says, reliable numbers are sadly lacking ( hence the request for practical test experience) and glamour seems to be the main selection criteria. MIPS looks like a good plan as does variable rate foam, and I'll try and avoid snaggable projections.

I had the biggest crash I've had on a mountain bike at Les Arcs last month,OTB,landed on my head I was wearing one of those green Bell Stoker helmets that Halfords were selling off cheap a few months ago.The helmet has a few dents in it,it definitely saved me.I've still got a bit of whiplash from the crash & another one about 20 mins later.I think I also had a bit of concussion.
I'm now looking at getting the Bell with the detachable chin guard, one of the other riders was wearing one & it saved his face.

I've got the Fixer full carbon MIPS.

I've never felt like I've had as much protection from an open face. The plastic MIPS head cradle is sweaty though.

It looks like kali are actually thinking about protection rather than aesthetics -has anyone tried / crashed one?
