Just come back from two weeks in Turkey and like many countries around the world, helmet wearing on two wheels (pedal and motorised) isn't particularly common.
I didn't ride a bike but I did wonder if I'd 'do as the locals' do and not bother or whether I'd religiously wear mine as I do at home.
This isn't a debate on whether a helmet works, more would you change your behaviour to match what others do?
We had a group of North Americans in the hotel for a couple of nights on a gentle road cycle tour and they all had helmets. Were I to take a MTB to Turkey then I'm pretty sure I would wear a helmet though I'm not sure if I'd change my mind in the 30' C + temps.
would not off road without one , might on the road.
TBH i generally treat it as a seatbelt and just always do
However if I had a bike and no helmet I would still be riding it.
Yes, it's my head and because I like to wipe my own ar*e thank you. 😀

Hmm.. I took my bike to Oz* and wore a helmet there even though it was really chuffing hot (hottest day was 48°C!!)
*(didn't know at the time I was legally obliged to wear a helmet there)
would you change your behaviour to match what others do?
lol
No.

We were in Oz just before they made helmets compulsory and I remember some of the debate about whether it would be a bad thing overall.
Glad others are in agreement with my view on wearing one.
One of my fave snaps from Sri Lanka is this fella we drove up behind during a rain storm
I was actually slightly surprised he didn't have someone on the crossbar holding the umbrella!

I think that debate is still ongoing.

Did you see that umbrella gadget (The Uberhood) in the Gruaniad bike blog this week:

Mental!
I'd wear one moreso because of being in a foreign country. They drive and act like maniacs over there. I would'nt fancy a 3 week stay in a turkish hospital

Hmm can I get one in time for Thetford D2D this weekend? 😆
I think a decent lightweight vented helmet is fine when it's hot (in fact on a recent holiday 1 day I took it off for a long climb in 30c heat and felt nauseous at the top and my head was pounding, next day I did a climb about the same length and it was even hotter but I left my helmet on and I was fine at the top - the only hassle being sweat running onto your glasses lens if you don't use something like a sweat guttr).

Spoken by someone who obviously hasn't had the pleasure of a third party wipe.

I have regularly ridden in temps of 30ºC and above and would always be thankful of the sun protection offered by the helmet among other things.
I went to turkey on honeymoon. Having driven there I have I confess there is no way I would ride on the road without full body armour, full face helmet and lots of stuntman training. Off road - I would wear a helmet.
