You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Left for work yesterday at 05:00
2nd left turn and my front tyre lost grip on white give way lines. ( i think ) but there was a pothole near by but it it happend too quick.
My helmet saved my life (specialized propero II) its split in 2 places and totally wasted. After waking up in hospital with broken ribs, rugby ball hematoma on hip and smashed up face i have for the first time realised how important helmets are. So money is no object and would to replace it with the safest one on the market. Or are they all the same? If so ill buy another one from specialised. Thanks.

Proof is in the pudding? Just buy another, glad your all ok 🙂
I really doubt that any one single helmet can be the best. Different helmets would perform differently in different tests or real world crashes. A full face downhill helmet may offer the best protection, but it would be too hot for road riding. It would also limit your vision and hearing a lot more than a road helmet would, so you may end up in a crash that you might have avoided if you could see or hear better.
Most helmet tests are pass/fail, not graded 0-100, A -> F or anything, so difficult to compare. Among the good quality helmets, MIPS is the only big innovation that would set some helmets apart form others that I'm aware of.
Is there a crash replacement program for yours?
Glad that you're OK!
I had similar to you, although not as bad. After seeing a seriously smashed helmet (I was trying to wheelie with SPDs), you'll never not bother again!
As Joe said, MIPS is the only improvement that seems to be more common place and less simple marketing hype.
I like ones with more back-of-head coverage too. Giro Xen type.
Glad you're okay!
Well, it's not good to wake up in hospital, but it's much much better than NOT waking up.
I had a wee slip on slippy rooty middle of nowhere woods track and whacked into a tree with the top of my head. Surely would have resulted in concussion without a helmet, probably would have tumbled down the steep slope next to me into the river, getting cold, and wet, waiting for darkness... shudder..
JoeG
never thought about that, I'll phone them today.
Specialised have one of the best crash replacement policies out there.
Definitely use the crash replacement policy from Specialized. If you want to upgrade why not try the Prevail. Similar styling to your bust one but lighter. If it has better crash protection is another matter.

Really? When I smashed my spesh lid I was under the impression it was only about 25% off? They were cheaper online at the time!
That Savant does look good (in a peakless way).
Always worth trying them on first though. What suits someone else' head may not suit yours.
I'd be looking at helmets with MIPS. Whilst your helmet cushioned your head from impact it may well have contributed to your being unconscious. For me motorcycle and bicycle helmets that try to reduce rotational forces are a new and interesting development. I've also broken a helmet or two over the years.
Tried a bell super 2r with MIPS and didn't like the fit. Obviously its supposed to help in a crash but the feeling of the helmet moving about slightly really put me off.
The Savant looks good, but try a Giro as I'm a Giro wearer and Specialized helmets are a little different in terms of shape. I can wear both but you may not be able to.
Building on that, the safest helmet is one that fits you best, and probably has MIPS. Extra cost does not mean extra safety above about £25. So, whatever you buy, plonk it on your head first.
From Spesh terms on helmet crash policy:-
Crashed helmets may be replaced for customers at 20% off of the retail price. To qualify, the helmet must be no older than three years from the date of purchase.
Bit crap really. Wonder what other manufactures have if
Specialised have one of the best crash replacement policies out there.
One tip is to try them on and try a few. I tried one and thought it was a good shape for my head and comfy until I tried the next one. The fit is much more important than how it looks
That's a hell of a crash for a give way line!
The crash was very unlucky, but given the rest of the injuries the helmet seems to have done its job.
Definitely try helmets on before buying. Some brands tend to suit some shape heads better than others, but things do change, so assumptions may be invalid. My Giro Feature is a size smaller than my Hex, for example, but both fit well...
So far as crash replacement programs go, there are two points of view. On the one hand it's likely as cheap to buy from CRC or whoever but if it applies the replacement program may get you the same sort of price and let the manufacturer have the impact data...
Aren't Spesh still the only mainstream bike helmet with Snell safety accreditation?
Not suggesting it made any difference in this instance but it's a (safety) step above most.
Bit crap really
why I never used a replacement policy- you can usually get a cheaper lid mail order than their policy reduction from rrp, and I am cynical enough to suspect
let the manufacturer have the impact data...
that the crashed lids go straight into a skip.
Healing vibes to the OP.
*sighs*

the thread would be multiple pages and no help to the OP?
Have a look at the Kali helmets. They have impressed me with the (apparent) thought that goes into them e.g. the way the foam is multiple densities, uses special manufacturing techniques etc.
