Are there any small lights available that fit onto gopro mounts?

I've been messing around with a solarstorm x2 and various different ways of getting them to mate together.. Just wondered if there are any commercial versions available.

how strong are the mounts that come out of a 3d printer?

I guarantee you wont be able to break it through normal use. You will most probably snap the screw holding it to the light before the mount gives way.
Is that your setup in the picture?

Thats an early attempt.. i have a couple of different alloy adaptors ordered to see which one works the best.. They are going to need the light to be drilled and tapped so that should be interesting

Oh, how does the mount attach to the light at the moment? Let me know how you get on, I can send you a printed mount to try.

I've never seen a commercial one but it's easy to adapt a standard gopro mount. I decided to go as low profile as possible so just got a gopro "foot" and removed all but the bit that slots into the sticky "shoe", then added a little wedge (made out of a clothespeg, bodge fans) and bolted teh light directly to that. No adjustability but that's OK, and keeping the light really low means it doesn't pull the helmet around as much

SP POV Light is exactly what you describe. It's designed for diving with a GoPro (so is waterproof), and can have a GoPro mounted on top, so that the light sits in between the mount and the GoPro. Runs on GoPro sized batteries too, so easy to source spares to boost runtime.

Lupine do a gopro mount for the Wilma that bolts straight to the bottom of my MTB Batteries Lumenator (the plate is 20mmx30mm with a hole for the m4 screw 8mm from one end). Works great.

This looks like a cracking product idea. I don't own a GoPro, but I'd quite likely buy the mounts to use with my Solarstorms if they offered more security than the lashups I use at the mo.
A particular problem I see is helmet mounts that are too clunky, not stable enough or a combination of the two.

I can make them very low profile. The base of my light is at the same hight as the helmet mount. And I make them so the light is fully adjustable in all planes. I suppose I could buy a solarstorm and make up some custom mounts if there is enough interest.

This is how mine is mounted at the moment.. I have a mount coming that is very similar to the lupine one so i will give that a try. The lupine one would probably work fine with the solarstorm x2.. it looks about the right size..

Piesoup.. the dimensions of the flat part of the solarstorm are 41.71mm x 20.41mm. The screwhole is centered 13.10mm in from one edge along the 41.71mm axis. This is to the rear of the light. The twin prong gopro mount would fit in front of that

My mounts make the light sit a lot lower. It sits in front of the mount, so the cable and switch will be either side of the go pro clamp. A lot less chance of snagging.
Haven't got any pics with me at work but can take a few tonight.

Gav, are these dims correct? Can you give me the centers of the switch and cable exit, and how far the switch sits proud please. Then I know how long I need to make the part.

Here is my light and mount. Mounts can be made into any config to suit your light.

Wow - looks spot on! Reckon you could do one to fit Solarstorms, and if so, how much would you do 'em for? We have a printer at work - not sure if its guardian would let me tinker with it, though... 🙁

I'd be interested in one too if you are doing a run? I'm using a bell super helmet with the gopro mount on my SSX2.

Happy to bung a few quid your way or donate here (or to a charity of your choice)

Piesoup.. The only issue with that mount is that if your gopro mount is to the rear of the helmet you may not have enough downward angle to get the beam where it needs to be. If it sat slightly higher you would have more option..

the mount i used is this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GoPro-style-ridecam-Adapter-Mount-/141430382842?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20ede860fa

If someone was to make a similar mount with the 2 prongs rather than 3 it would be much simpler. I just had to find a longer screw to hold it all together. It would probably have been easier to just remove the third prong that has the treaded section so that it worked with a standard length bolt...

The dims dont have to be very accurate, just so the button and cable don't
foul with the mount.
Gav, you can flip the mount to get the light to shine lower.
The beauty of a 3d printer, is anything is possible. If your mount sits more to the rear of the helmet, I can make the mount to suit. My light sits right in the centre of my lid, less stress on my neck.

How about I make a few different ones for you guys to try? All I ask is that the postage is covered? Funds are tight at the mo!

What size bolts are used on the solar storm? I'll need to know for the hole. Or would you rather I not drill a hole, then you can get the light in the perfect position to suit you.

I've seen strength mentioned a few times, but no one considering if the mount will brake off in a crash or colliding with a branch.

Most helmet mounted lights can come off easily, my ayups for example are held with a rubber band that locates over a nub at the rear so the light can come off fairly easily. A nylon bolt would presumably offer a similar breakable point.

Not wishing to hijack a thread but.....has anyone tried mounting a light and a Gopro to their helmet?

Would 1 to each side to balance the weight work better than trying to fasten them both on top?

Just let me say, 3D printed parts are plenty strong enough if printed properly and used as designed. Like anything really.

I use a screw with a wasted portion, that snaps before the threads in the aluminium light housing are damaged. Other than the oring attached lights and the old L&M, I dont think any others have strain relief in their mounts. Easy enough to print a part of the mount that would break should you want it, but then the mount will be forever useless. I think he screw with the wasted portion is the way to go. I can supply the correct size screw / bolt too.

Piesoup - sorry - I owe you some measurements. I'll more than happily pay postage and provide feedback. Will drop you a mail.

One of the problems this solves, for me at least, is swapping lights between different helmets. With the usual velcro strap jobs, you need to position the light carefully, maybe unvelcro some of the padding - basically, it's a faff. And I have one lid with two central fore-and-aft beams, and one with a single central beam, so you need to mount the light differently for each lid. using a GoPro stick-on mount should make it a bunch easier!

Likewise but I wanted the mount to be sacrificial in case I ****ted a tree with my head. There are a lot of low hanging trees where I ride.
I cut the elasticated straps off the 'headtorch' assembly that came with the SSX2 and cable tied the plastic part on to my Super using thin ties. Then just a case of using the rubber loop to attach/remove as and when.

can i ask why are you guys set on the go pro mounting? im guessing its because you have a go pro? or is it because its a really good mount. im a bit wary aboyt sticking anything to my lid.

on the flip side i reckon i can half the mount size and have a much better fixing system. fun this 3d printing mullarky

My Bell Super helmet came with a Go Pro mount.

I don't have a Go Pro but it would be nice to use the mount for a Solar Storm light.

Has anyone successfully bodged the mount that comes with the helmet to hold a light?

It's a really good mount- light, stable and secure, very thin, and quick release. Removable too, it's just a 3m sticky pad. I use it because I had all the parts already but it'd still be a good option if I didn't (though, I wouldn't have thought of it 😉 )

Yup - I've done it. Really happy with it. At work at the mo but will upload some pics later to this thread.

Also used a second super/go-pro mount and modified it with some sugru to fit the vent on my road lid, so have the same mount system on both lids!

Cool, send me any dimensions of the Trout light and Shedbrewed, can you send me the dims of the SSX2 as well. I'll knock up a few different ones with a wasted portion designed to shear at the weekend and send them out for you to try.
The plastic is easily filed, so if they are not quite right, you can file them to fit. Then if you want a re printed one, just show me what you have adjusted so I can redraw them.
My email is in my profile too.

Cheers

Bit late to the party but I'd also be very interested in this if that's ok?

Will get the light and mounts out and do some measuring/scribbling and try to work out a secure, low profile way of doing it.

Yes please - and sorry it's taken me so long to come back - work fun.
I've go a Solarstorm and a fake Solarstorm. The dimensions are roughly the same as Shedbrewed (using my ruler -sorry, no micrometer)

real:
M5 mount hole 7 - 7.5m from back of light
underside is 34 x 42mm (42 is front-to-back measurement)

Fake:
M5 mount hole 7 - 7.5m from back of light
underside is 35 x 42mm

Both lights have a very shallow, 10mm wide channel about .5 to 1mm deep running the length of the underside that's the full length of the light at 42mm long. you can see it in Shed's last pic.

I'll drop you a mail with some pics, Piesoup. I have an engineer mate who will probably have access to a micrometer and be good at measuring things. 🙂

Just sent you over an email.

I also completely forgot to include any sort of dimensions! It's actually identical to the above, 7.5mm give or take from the back of the lamp with a M4 bolt. Surface area under the lamp is a lot smaller but can file to remove anything that gets tangled.

Thanks!

Actually - one other thing. The three channels on the bottom of the solarstorm might be hand for steadying the mount a little - even if there were little nubbins the size of a grain of rice on the light / mount interface, that could be cool. Might not be massively practical in a 3d printer - I'm guessing you'd start with the lamp interface and extrude up to the bolt hole.

Thanks for all the pictures and dimensions guys. Here is a quick drawing, very similar to mine actually. I looked at the idea of having a center raised portion to sit in the light groove, but then you wont get the slight left and right adjustment. I can easily put it in if needed.
As you can see, there is 23mm of plastic for the light to sit on. The light is 42mm long. Would you want the mount longer? I wouldn't worry about the printed mount slipping in the GoPro mount, it sits nice and tight in there. If you find the bigger lights do slip down, we can make adjustments.

If there isn't any feedback on the proposed design, I will print off a load over the weekend and we can see how they work out.

Thanks for all the emails, I will reply this evening individually.

edit - beaten to it.

Looking great!

Going to have to play with trimming the front edge as my lamp, usefully, has the power chord coming out of the bottom.

Perfect - that'll work a treat. No need to make it extend out to 42mm, I reckon. A bit of yaw built in would probably be a very good thing; it's easy to re-position a velcro'ed mount, but not something that's been 3Med on.

Excellent, I'll get printing!
James, how far is the cable from the hole on your light? And how long do you need your mount? I notice on your light the mount sits on the smaller diameter portion.
The printer can print all the parts at the same time even if they are different so don't worry if you guys want differences between the mounts. The plastic is easily filed or drilled so modification at home is easy.
So, James wants mounts allowing for the cable,
Bent udder wants Solar Storm mounts,
Shed wants Solar Storm mounts

Any one else?

I've just finished adapting my helmet's GoPro mount so that my new light will fit; I first drilled a hole through the mount pad in line with the bolt which holds the two pieces of the mount together, then found a longer bolt which would go through the whole mount and into the light, and packed it out in places with washers. I then cut a groove in the rear of the mount so that the light cable had somewhere to go, and ran the cable through that then back to the outside of the helmet. Pics paint a thousand words:

Here they are! I few more holes to drill, then I'll send them. You can't use a drill as it tends to rip the plastic. Spinning the bits by hand, 0.5mm increments 😕

It's the actual GoPro mount which came with my MET Parabellum, I just had to do some adapting and adding of washers to make it fit, cheers! The mount comes apart so it fits into an air vent from above and below and bolts together, I just altered it so that the bolt makes it through to thread into the light as well.

The cable goes through the mount into the helmet, then runs through a central channel between two support pads so the wire never touches my bonce, then goes back out the next vent along, then runs down the back of the helmet to my backpack where the battery is.

James, how far is the cable from the hole on your light? And how long do you need your mount? I notice on your light the mount sits on the smaller diameter portion.

Sorry - missed this earlier will get the measurement over to you asap.

Mounts are looking great!

1/4 turn gopro mount off ebay and one m4 screw (cut down) is all you need to convert a solarstorm x2 to fit the gopro buckles.

I am doing a run of Magicshine 880 go pro mounts, so if there are guys who need mounts for that light, or any other light for that matter, email is in my profile.
