Just got back into MTBing this year after a few years of not riding due to injury(not bike related). Had an Evans voucher to spend so decided to treat myself to a well overdue new helmet.
Ordered the Giro Montaro in a medium as it has great reviews and I liked it. Read the reviews that said Giros suit an oval head. No prob, I thought. Always had Giro in the past and consider myself fairly oval bonced. Medium goes up to 59cm, I measure 58. I had the chance to try a medium Giro Chronicle in a shop and it fit perfectly.
Anyway, helmet arrives and I try it on. Front and sides fit perfectly but the lower back section digs uncomfortably into the boney bits behind my lugs. So, sent it back and ordered it in a large.
Large arrived today. I think it's too big! With the retention system loose the helmet feels very roomy on my head. I can tighten the retention system until it is a good snug fit but even then the helmet feels as if it is floating and wobbles quite a bit even with the straps tightened. Now, I've never had a MIPS lid before so was wondering if the floaty feeling is normal with these? Or should I just face up to the fact that my bonce is the wrong shape for this lid? Think I know the answer already, but would be interested in folks opinions.
For reference, other half has a Bell super 3R MIPS in a medium and that fits me pretty well, maybe a little snug but still comfy.
Go into the evans store and try ones on until they fit - best and simplest advice
Good advice, and will prob be my next course of action although my nearest Evans is over an hour away and I don't have a lot of spare time. TBH, Evans don't have a lot in stock at the moment that floats my boat. I quite liked the Chronicle that I tried on there but reviews say it is a bit hot and being unfit as I am, I tend to be a sweaty b**tard. If the general opinion is that it is the wrong size, I will send it back and maybe buy something elsewhere and use the voucher for something else.
if you can get your little finger between your head and the shell at any point it is too large no matter what you do with the cradle.
OK, interesting test idea. Well, just tried it and no chance of getting it in anywhere other than dead centre at the back and even there it's fairly tight and it will only go in up to the end of the nail. Bearing in mind I have quite slim fingers, what does that say?
sounds like it is not bad for size then. Next test. Helmet on and do the strap up properly - not slack like most folk have them. Tip your head forward and try to rotate it foreward pulling hard on the back of the shell. If it stays on its OK - if it rotates far enough to hit your nose its too big or the wrong shape.
Yep, I think it's too big/wrong shape. Straps tight and retention system very tight and it moves down over my eyebrows. Straps tight and retention system comfortably tight it comes down to my nose. In contrast the Bell hardly moves at all.
Better get it sent back. Cheers!
