If your only ever going up there once, what is the absolute must do loop. I'm thinking making the most of that climb by hitting the best descent down and loop thereafter. Riding with a large group with mixed abilities so better that the majority of the descent is rideable.

It's a tough one to spell isn't it...

With the group you describe, I would go up Keppel Cove, up to the summit, then back down sticks pass. If the ability is higher, then dollywaggon followed by grizedale tarn is excellent (after the initial trialsy bit with wheel sized water bars).

Mixed abilities? Up from Grizedale tarn along top and down sticks pass.

😀

I preferred your original spelling. It had just the correct amount of letters to let the reader know what you were on about, but at the same time, it was no where near correct.

I don't think I could spell it correctly from memory.

😆 I know where I'm going but too lazy to check the spelling beforehand.

Like the old coach rd then up to the Dodds on the way up - if it's dry this is a really nice spin up then a short push at the end. If it's not been dry then swerve this as it gets really boggy.
All the way along the mountain to Helvellyn, then back down Sticks is good.
Dollywagon off the S end to Grizedale is miles too hard for mixed ability, unfortunately, as the next bit is v good.

yup I concur, stay well away from dollywagon if you have any novices, they'll be walking. iiwy up keppel, then to the summit to see it and say 'I've done it' retrace your steps and down sticks to the YHA.
When you go up Keppel, if you cross a stream (beck) on a little wooden bridge, you've gone the wrong way! Mark my words!

I would go up dolly wagon & depending on how dry it is/has been, descend the Dodds and down the coach road.
If it's wet- Sticks.

I reckon Striding Edge would probably be the most technically rewarding descent 🙂

Sticks pass is still relatively tech in places. People make it sound really mundane at times, but it's not. Keppel Cove is a nice way up too. A lot of it is rideable, up until a point...

Another option is -
From Glennriding up Kepple Cove
Summit Helveyllen
Descend Birk Side
Fire Road down to the road and go left
Take the left up past the waterfalls to Grisdale Tarn
Descend from the Tarn back towards Glennriding.

But if it's dry up The Dodds, Summit, descend Stcks Pass (although I thought this was a bit meh!!) back to the YHA

If the not so experienced don't mind a bit of walking down, I would be tempted to take on the Dollywagon as the descent from Grisdale Tarn is miles better than Sticks, IMO.

If your group has fairly mixed abilities I would avoid dolly wagon.
It's a bit of a chew. It doesn't have much flow and is stone pitch steps for a fair chunk.

I would say up Kepel cove zigzags then up to the summit for a photo at the summit shelter
Then turn round back down to Sticks pass. If you feel cheeky there's another option that makes this a longer descent
Have a look on the map its seldom seen.

Keppel grove, summit back down to sticks pass to the quarry then onto seldom seen which is a footpath on the os map (takes you right down to lake level and is amazeballs) edit what he said above, just be considerate to walkers on seldom seen.

You don't really want to be taking a large group of novices down Seldom seen, it is a footpath with a lot of exposure at the top, the farmer is getting quite angry.
