Hi there,
Somehow managed to completely strip the thread out of one of the holes on my crank arms that hold the peddle in. Bit of a basic question, but someone suggested that helicoil may be a way to fix this. Otherwise it's a new crankset so worth a try. I'm not sure what size/thread helicoil I should be getting. Grateful for any suggestions.

Any decent LBS should have the bits to do this. I wouldn't buy the bits just to do one, and it's worth getting it done by someone who's experienced, or you might get a slightly off-axis helicoil.. Where are you based?
you will struggle to find the correct helicoil as it is a wierd pitch (9/16 x 20tpi) and left hand too on one side. if anyone manages to find some please let me know.

If your thinking of diy dont bother unless you have a pillar drill and a means to ensure you are drilling in the right plane ........ I know jamie has the ability but do you ? A hand drill holding the crank between your feet will result in a bent feeling crank.

just tried to buy a unior set, been given the runaround a bit - no-one appears to retail it in the uk so contacted unior direct who put me onto unior uk who put me onto raleigh who are supposed to be the reseller who then tried to put me onto one of their retailers. i quoted all the part numbers but from the way the guy was talking i'm not thinking he will call back.
anyone point me in the direction of somebody who will take my money, please let me know
just ordered a set from ceway. i'm off to dig in the box of rubbish to look for some cranks to mangle!!
reckon it might be worth making up a jig to hold the cranks straight

I have a couple of cranks needing fixed up , namely my municycles where some idiot may have put his pedals in the wrong way round after a few beers at a party .....
The pillar drill i bought off mcmoonter last year will do the job admirably im sure 🙂
60 odd quid i think (two reamer/taps and 10off each hand of insert). i'm not sure of the make but it wasn't Unior. if you are anywhere near essex feel free to come and use mine, and i can watch you mangle your cranks first....

anyone got any broken cranks i can practice on?
I've just done the same - stripped the pedal thread on my SLX cranks. I thought it easier just to buy a new deore chainset for £50. Perhaps if it was a new XT or above it might have been worth trying a repair.

I bought the set a few years ago-hope your inserts work better than mine did!
Let me know how you get on, mine were all slightly the wrong pitch-even double checked the part numbers & what I ordered & had to then chase the threads out in the inserts. Less than ideal.
You really need a inserting tool to get good results, like this one but with correct pitch etc

Genuinely impressed with the service i had, perhaps if i was going to be doing it regular i would have invest more time and money trying to do it myself - but £30 all in so i could keep using my cranks was ideal.
right. you do not need an inserting tool because these are solid inserts, not wire ones.
job one - how to ensure you are perpendicular to the original hole?

screw in a standard pedal tap and clock up and down and also around to get it flat and also concentric. i managed to get it better than 0.02mm so i can live with that. took a long time though.
then place oversize tap/reamer in with sprung centre to apply some pressure and ensure it doesnt go wobbly

now to cut to length. i have been thinking about this. the insert wants to be 0.5 to 1 thread below the face the pedal pushes up against, so i need to cut it down accurately.

use a pedal axle - found a set of v12s in the box.
lathe is being used at the moment so i'll go and walk the dog and do it later. i reckon either loctite, or peen it to stop it moving. or both!
i will find an old BB, put it in the lathe and measure the pedal axle runout once done to see what's what when done.
trimmed it down on the lathe. Had to run it backwards and find a lefthanded tool to run upside down so it screwed it onto the axle and not off. Put it is into the crank with some retaining compound and staked it too. It actually feels really good. It tightened a pedal up fully stuck the pedal in the vice and really leaned on it. The pedal body was bending but the insert seems fine.
Btw I didn't buy the taps because I needed to only because I wanted to have the facility to fix them if I wanted to.
