Trying to plan a follow up bike adventure with the wean, and would appreciate knowing what the Hohenmeter for the WHW is so I can compare. For example the C2C seems to be twice the distance of the WHW, but is 'only' 5200 metres height gain. I've seen WHW stated as 4,400 or 5,500, both of which seem very unlikely in comparison to 5,200 in twice the distance for C2C
Anyway, anyone know?
PS. Daern, up for an adventure at Easter?
It's about 3154m. You can count up individual sections here https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/west-highland-way.shtml
It's a route that goes through and around the mountains not over them.
When I ran it last year, I recorded 151km and 2,985m ascent. This was recorded on a Suunto watch and uploaded to Strava.
That was using the new "low" path after Rowardennan. The old "high" path (the fireroad) is the one that you'd more likely use for biking it, but I don't think there'd be much in it elevation wise.
[EDIT] the 151km is from the underpass at Milngavnie station to the leisure centre in FOrt William. The "official" finish is a few km further on the FW High Street.
Its not over the top of any mountains, but there are lots of small ups and downs. Especially alongside Loch Lomond. Maybe only a few metres at times, but it all adds up.
And depends on how you measure it. GPS devices may not be accurate for measuring small changes, and most mapping software will apply some sort of smoothing.
We got 3632m when we did it last year when we skipped the same northern section of the loch as you did.
measured on a Garmin watch
I am also trying to find a challenge for mine for this year. Thinking possibly the South Downs Way over a weekend.
I rode it in September and got 12,224 feet (3726m) elevation gain on Strava and about the same on garmin connect. This was recorded on a forerunner 935. I started from Glen Nevis youth hostel.
How old is the wean? some sections are unridable and require a bit of hike a bike. Can (s)he lift their bike and walk, climb for a short distance. Its mainly the Loch Lomond side.
I'm with macdubh on that. Also some patience and persuasion will be needed up and over Conic Hill not long after starting, and later up the Devil's Staircase and on the climb out of Kinlochleven. Good on them, though.
IIRC, the OP has done a fair bit in Cairngorms and Europe on techy stuff, and his kid is tweenager(ish).
Mine was 9 when he did the WHW after we got inspired from thegenralist original write up of his adventure.
The comic hill decent was one of the highlights of our trip.
