You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Just replaced my broken old style heckler with a new style one from the classifieds (cheers DB100). Slowly building it up and put on my old ht2 cranks with 22/36/bash. It looks to me like theirs not enough room for the chain to get on the 36t ring - it will catch on the swingarm where it bolts to the pivot. I've got 1 spacer on the drive-side as per ht2 fitting instructions for 73mm shells.
So, is this a known problem? (If so, well done SC - 36t rings have been popular with the target audience of this frame for some time now). And what can I do? Fit another spacer on the drive side (won't that mess with chain line?) or will I have to go to a 34t (or even smaller). Or is it both?? Or have I imagined it and it will all be ok?
Cheers
My chain hit the swingarm pivot when changing up from granny to 36t but only when it was on the workstand, how ever its never done it when in use with pressure on the chain.
Yes it is a known problem. Mate of mine has a Heckler and it's exactly the same. Apparently not all bikes are like this for some odd reason.
He made a very thin spacer (1mm?) to move the cranks out slightly.
Where did your old Heckler break out of curiosity? Which model year?
Steve - it was 2004/5. Front triangle cracked around the pivot bolt weld on one side
That's pretty much exactly what happened to my 06 one!
I ran a 36t xt no problems but gone to a slx double bash now on my heckler (latest generation)
I've not had a problem running a 22x36t SLX chainset + bash..
There is not enough space for a 36 ring and the standard chainline; it runs fine in the garage but the chain can hit the arm during up shift; does not happen always, but when it does, it makes a nasty gash into the arm.
It can be fixed easily by moving the chainline a bit with a spacer; I moved mine by 2.5mm with an extra external BB spacer and had no problems since.
I use the SLX 22/36 on mine with no probs, 07 model.
08 and 09 swing arms have had a section of metal work shaved off for exactly that reason.
Cheers all for the replys. Done a bit of research on mtbr, and as unsponsored says, more recent swingarms have the edges of the swingarm around the pivot axle shaved off to allow it. Perhaps some of you guys running 36t with no probs have these more recent ones? Or slx are spaced differently maybe? Anyway, I'm going to try 2 bb spacers on the drive side and see if this works - i'll report back (assuming I survive)...
