Hi all,
Ive got the chance to buy a xl heckler frame but Im not sure if it will be to big now Ive had a good luck at the geometry compared to my stumpy.
Im 6 foot 1 with 33 inch inside leg which puts me according to santa cruz website on a large heckler.
However the top tube length is something like 2cm shorter. I know it doesnt sound a lot but the reach etc for the stumpy is bob on for me.
The xl heckler has a top tube which is 0.5 cm longer than the stumppy.
So it sounds about right but Im just worried it will be like a gate..
Also the seat tube length is quite a bit longer on the xl too.
what do you think ??
cheers
steve
I'm 6.3 with the same leg as you and rode an xl heckler with a 800 mm stem got a buddy who's 5.11 and rides a lrg with a 70mm stem. I recon you'd be better of with an xl and go inline seat post and adjust the rest with stems. And as you've stated Santa Cruz do come up small for there sizing and the heckler in real terms is a 24inch top tube length.
If it where me go for it there great frames.
cheers batman..
just out of interest how did it ride?/ was it like a gate lol !!
which shock did yours have ?
I had a large Heckler with a 65mm stem (6ft) and there is no way you could describe it as a gate, especialy coming from Pitch.
what size pitch godzilla?
i am comparing a large stumpy to a xl heckler
I am 6ft 2 and rode (happily) a large heckler and 50mm stem
Oh and a large pitch with 60mm stem
I went from a large Pitch to a large Heckler both the same 65mm stem, Heckler felt more compact by a mile, but quite tall as the Pitch has loads of stand over, also the Heckler felt steep as a b*stard.
The bike where polar oppersits, tall & short vs low & long.
I had the same problem, according to the SC website i should fit a medium but i went for a large for the slightly longer top tube.
godzilla - i did the opposite swap. Pitch is night and day better in every way than the heckler
5'11" here and riding a large with a 70mm stem.
Feels bang on to me
Rob in what way is the pitch better tHan a heckler?
Can relate to your opinion as I've had 3 pitches and not rode a heckler!!
Pitch is night and day better in every way than the heckler
I kind of have to agree that the Pitch is the better bike and was more fun to ride, Santa cruz market it as "all mountain" but it feels more like long legged trail bike, it felt quicker on the everything but the climbs and decents, in the Alps on long rockey decents the Heckler felt like it would tuck real easy and the front felt like it was made of pasta with revs on, i wouldnt turn my nose up at a Heckler as a trail bike, i just expected it the feel a tougher and cope with the downs better, the New revised bike sound like a giant leap forward.
As most of the above have said def not a gate fit was fine and I had a reasonable amount of seat post on show.
I had a fox rp23 and it rode fine once set up but then I've ridden single pivots on and off for ten plus years and like there feel, mind I also like vpp so ont know if that helps 😀
Having said all that what with angles and fork choices now I would only look at a newer style one as the older version is more of a all in trail/XC bike in my mind.
I'm 6'1" and just bought an xl heckler, 50mm stem, fits me fine. I find a large in most manufacturers too short and low, with the exception of yeti whos large is the same as other brands XL's. If you have reasonably long legs then an XL with the stem slammed will give a stiffer front end then a L with spacers (more noticeable than any tapered bollox IMHO)
I think a lot of riders are scared of having a big frame but with people running short stems you need the extra top tube length if you intend on riding any sort of distance. I reckon in the future bikes will all have longer top tubes to compensate for short stems -like the Mondraker zero concept.
For comparison - previously had an XL pitch (was a bit big but the large wasn't big enough!) XL mondraker dune (very short for an XL but no standover due to the stupid frame shape), large SB66 (spot on!).
Go for it!
The main problem is trying to use height as the only measure of bike size 🙂
5'9 on the limit of a medium heckler...
Seat post angles make a difference too but more so if your going to be on a smaller frame with a lot of post showing.
