Hi guys,

Had a spectacular crash at the bike park (Leeds) last week so I'm currently exploring some easy-ish routes around Yorkshire on the trail bike - no blasting 20ft doubles/drop for a few weeks while my ribs heal haha!

I did the Bingley Bash yesterday (backwards) which I really enjoyed, and I am going to get the train over to Hebden Bridge on Friday. Does anyone have any recommend routes? I have found a few online and was thinking of following the one on Blazing Saddles website ( https://blazingsaddles.co.uk/riding-in-calderdale/local-routes/) but if anyone has any better ideas I'm open to suggestions.

Also if anyone is local and fancies a ride out on Friday, let me know!

I'm going to be in Hebden for a few days soon and I'm also looking for routes. I'd rather avoid the steep death tech as we'll be a mixed ability group and also I'm old and don't really want to break myself. So any recommendations for more XCish stuff would be welcome.

Stick to bridlepaths, and you won't hit any "steep death tech" of any kind... just fun XC with ever changing views.

Thanks for the help!

I have found this and I think it sounds pretty good, fairly short with some decent descents - https://www.cyclecalderdale.co.uk/route/view/mtb-great-descents

Anyone tried this route?

There are some lovely classic descents on that one that I wouldn't do with painful ribs... not tech, but definitely not smooth and jangle free. Depends how sore you are I suppose.

This looks like a decent ride, maybe add Stoodley Pike into the mix to make it longer.

Hmm I managed a few steep/rocky descents yesterday without too much pain so I think I should be OK, its mainly when I twist suddenly so fingers crossed I should be ok with a couple of Ibruprofen! I know I really should be resting but it's my last few weeks of being part-time part furlough so trying to make the most of it.

Also silly question maybe, but which way should I be riding this route, clockwise or anti clockwise? I cant seem to work it out from the instructions!

The moors above pecket well are running dry ish at the moment, well worth the effort to get up there before coming back down to hardcastle crags if you like a bit of moorland singletrack.

The loop in the latest mag looks good, from Walsden - it’s on my list to do.

hmmmm, it's very easy to loose track up there though and wander about aimlessly. It's not somewhere I'd go if I was new to the area.

I did a slight variation on this one the other week one night after work: https://flattyres-mtb.co.uk/route-guides/yorkshire-mtb-routes/hebden-bridge-heptonstall-moor/

Not done it in years and was really, really enjoyable. Was a lovely warm evening but did the BW up to the New Delight, turn right and road up to Slack where I picked up the (footpath) across Heptonstall Moor towards Egypt and then dropped down to and crossed the dam at Lower Gorple. Short road section to Widdop before a big climb up and over the tops. Lovely BW off the main descent to the back of Cant Clough Res and then BW all the way to the wind farm at Long Causeway. Road section for a mile or two and then drop to the BW which runs all the way through Whirlaw Stones and then dropped down through Tod Golf Course and finished with the descent that pops out at Eastwood. If I'd had time I'd have climbed up to Mankinholes, along London Road and then down Birthday X or Kebab St but time was against me so just span along the road back to Hebden.

Alternatively, depending on where you're coming from you could easily do a nice ride from Halifax, over the tops towards Brighouse and then work your way up/down the valley heading west to finish in Sowerby Bridge where you could hop back on the train home.

Off the top of my head, something minus daft amounts of tech could include climbing up to Beacon Hill from Halifax, through Southowram and down Elland Woods (take the top trail that goes all the way around towards Siddal and then hairpin back and take the various options down to the Coliers Arms). Along the canal to Brighouse and then up and down through Rastrick Woods to bring you back to the canal. Along the canal/road to West Vale and climb up through North Dean Woods with a descent to Copley and climb back out again. Loop of Norland Moor before either dropping down something direct to Sowerby Bridge, Wireworks which spits you out opposite Lloyds Data Centre or back into North Dean for more descents in there and a 2 mile spin along the canal to SB or back up into Halifax.

This is the Hebden descents route with Stoodley pike lumped on.

I might give this a bash at the weekend.

Also, loads out from Walsden way, you'll work it out, all on Strava.

This looks perfect I think I'll give this a go!

Thanks everyone for the help, I've just joined here and is a breath of fresh air to find helpful people unlike the toxic FB MTB groups.

Chuck's route looks cool, got some nice stuff on it. Weather looks good to, hope you do OK, and ribs hold out!

Just an update, I did the route suggested by Chuck yesterday - WOW! Amazing day out in the saddle!

I probably was a bit over-biked on my 160mm/150mm trail bike for a lot of it, made the descents a LOT of fun though (hit 39.5mph at one point according to Strava). Weather was perfect, and my ribs just about held up too.

Lots of variety, some stunning views, couple of cheeky half pints at a few pubs along the way, but the best bit was the descent from Stoodley Pike - one of the best natural downhill sections I've ridden.

Highly recommend!

Was the tree still down across the bottom of Peckett?

I didn't see any fallen trees, as I don't know the area I couldn't tell you for sure though.

I am heading back there this Friday for more exploring, it's looking like a scorcher!

Thanks. If you didn't see it it's been moved. It was about a foot in diameter and waste height across the bottom of pecket well.
Have fun tomorrow, seems to be drying out quite nicely the last few days
