I'm thinking of getting a HRM ideally wrist worn that doesn't look like it's made by apple, I'd prefer it to look like a watch. So any reccomendations on what to look for features wise or how it takes HR if there are different methods etc. . I don't want to spend a fortune I'd just like to start monitoring my exercise HR.

I've a Garmin Fenix 6 and my OH has an Apple watch - hers needs charging every day, mine about every 10...

Irrelevant of brand, charging something so often is a PITA.

Suunto race here that I'm very happy with. Easy to use and as above does not need frequent charges (once a week perhaps depending on how much I use it). My wife's pixel watch is pretty much a daily charge and the GPS performance is woeful compared.

One of the Garmin- they all appear pretty decent - I’ve a fairly basic one that meets my needs.

Just to add another recommendation - Polar Vantage M3 would do you well. Optical HR on the wrist or HR strap

I've got a Garmin Instinct 2, though more for ride tracking than the HR, but it's interesting too see when I'm alive and not.

Battery life is a month of you're not tracking anything. Days life left become hours when tracking though, but means you could do a 24hr epic on one charge.

May be OTT just for HR though and difficult to say on price as depends how much you consider is a fortune.

For this I’d suggest you want one with  chest strap.  In my experience optical sensors are less responsive to sudden HR changes such as from exercise.

Whatever garmin takes your fancy, though there are cheaper alternatives.

Very happy with my Polar H10 though equally happy with my cheapo from Decathlon.

Both chest straps so you may not be interested.

Garmin Instinct 2...

Go through the STW deals, mine was £175.

Same size and shape as a G-Shock, so it looks like a 'watch'. Does tonnes of useful stuff and the HR works very accurately (much more so than previous gen wrist based HR monitoring kit I've used).
