A group of 4 of us are planning a mid-Wales bikepacking trip in June, that relies on using the train from Church Stretton to Llandovery. Has anyone got any experience of using this line (sometimes the train has only one carriage), and whether we are likely to be able to travel with bikes? Thanks
You can book bike spaces in advance to avoid disappointment. With it being 4 of you, it would be advisable to do so. If they don't have enough space, at least you'll know beforehand.
Cheers. I don't think you can book bikes on this service, but even if you can, there's a max of 2 bike spaces. It would be really helpful to know if others have used this line with more than 2 riders, how busy the service is, etc.
Yep you can't book bikes on local Welsh trains I use Wolverhampton to caersws a lot for bike packing trips and it's pot luck ,used the train to church stretton once and there is only 2 spaces in there but on either train the conductors have been great help with letting one or 2 extras on as long as you don't leave them blocking the carriage or door ways ,coming back from last year's WRT they let 5 of us on
I think it depends very much on the Conductor. Me and a mate got on to find 2 bikes already in the available spot but we wedged ours in and the conductor was fine.
Its a Transport For Wales route and uses class 155 single car units usually, so only 2 doors per side and only 2 spaces for bikes, no large vestibule like some 2 car trains.
The one time I've used it it was a single carriage and packed! Turned out that the numbers were due to it being the last day of some offer along the lines of "travel anywhere in Wales for £1 if you are over 65". There was only me with a bike and I had to move it every time the conductor wanted to exit his cab and open the doors.
